STATEMENT OF THE
ISSUE:
National Small Business Week, established in 1963 by
the U.S. Small Business Administration, is recognized
annually to highlight the critical role small businesses and entrepreneurs play in driving economic growth,
innovation, and community vitality. In the City of
Richmond, small businesses are central to the local
economy, providing jobs, essential services, and
contributing to the character and resilience of
neighborhoods across the city.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
PROCLAMATION recognizing May 3–9, 2026, as
National Small Business Week in the City of Richmond
and encouraging all residents to support local small
businesses – Mayor Eduardo Martinez (510-620-6503).
DISCUSSION: Small businesses are the backbone of Richmond’s local economy, contributing to job creation, commercial activity, and community character. National AGENDA

Small Business Week provides an opportunity to highlight their contributions and reaffirm the City’s commitment to supporting their growth and success.
The City will support activities from May 4 through May 8, 2026 to recognize and uplift local businesses.
Residents are encouraged to support small businesses and be on the lookout for events and activities happening throughout the week.
