THE FOLLOWING WAS NOTED:
3-10-2023 9:00 am Site visit to observe area of slope erosion mudslide on Santa Fe Avenue in Point Richmond, CA. The slide occurred in soil above the interface with a rock slope below. The slope should be protected by using plastic sheeting and sandbags.
Santa Fe Avenue experienced slope erosion and slope soil failure which stripped much of the soil and vegetation from the slope leaving predominantly bare soil and rock exposed for a portion of the slope. The soil flowed down Santa Fe Ave. on the street and into the street drainage system. Some mud also flowed onto adjacent properties. Main failure occurred at the slope break, where the steepness of the slope becomes much steeper. The soils above the point apparently became saturated and slid off the bedrock surface below.
Photographs 1 and 2. Main soil erosion/slide failure along Santa Fe Ave.
Photographs 3 and 4. Erosion and slumping occurring along adjacent portions of the slope.
Ph
Photographs 5 and 6. Street-Trail above Santa Fe. Water from this area was ponding and flowed over the slope in several places leading to erosion-sliding on Santa Fe. A clogged drop inlet was located in this area.
The attached photo shows the general area to tarp, extending from 417 to 409 Santa Fe Ave. We are also including a presentation by Alan Kropp and Associates of typical slope protection methods. The tarping can generally follow this method.
The apparent cause of the failure is excessive runoff from the trail/street above- Golden Gate Avenue. The storm drain ditch and storm drainpipe were completely buried in soil and water was running down the middle of the street and flowing down the slope at different locations. The main slope failure occurred on the slope immediately below the clogged storm drain drop inlet.
3-13-2023 Site visit performed to follow up on tarping of Santa Fe Ave erosion-slide area.
Photographs 7 and 8. Tarped slope on 3-13-2023. Blocked drop inlet on Golden Gate (trail) above Santa Fe.
