STATEMENT OF THE
ISSUE:
This agenda item seeks City Council approval of a
proclamation recognizing the Richmond Pow Wow and
celebrating the cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples. The proclamation acknowledges the
importance of honoring Indigenous heritage, promoting
cultural understanding, and recognizing the significance of the Pow Wow as a community celebration of tradition, resilience, and unity.

storytelling, art, food, and fellowship. While rooted in the customs of many Native Nations, modern Pow Wows also provide opportunities for education, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
The City of Richmond acknowledges that it is located on the ancestral and unceded homeland of the Huchiun Band of the Ohlone people. Recognizing Indigenous history and supporting cultural celebrations such as the Richmond Pow Wow reflects the City's commitment to honoring the first peoples of this region and promoting respect for Indigenous cultures and traditions.
The Richmond Pow Wow provides residents and visitors with an opportunity to experience Indigenous traditions, learn about Native history, and celebrate the diversity and resilience of Indigenous communities. The event fosters cultural appreciation, strengthens community connections, and promotes dialogue that advances mutual understanding and respect.
By recognizing the Richmond Pow Wow, the City reaffirms its commitment to celebrating cultural diversity, acknowledging Indigenous contributions past and present, and supporting events that bring the community together through education, cultural expression, and shared experiences.
