DISCUSSION:
Latinx Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15 through October 15 in recognition of the histories, cultures, and enduring contributions of Latinx communities in the United States. The observance begins on September 15 to coincide with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, followed by Mexico on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Belize on September 21.
Richmond's Latinx community has played a vital role in shaping the City's history, economy, culture, and civic life. From business owners and educators to artists, public servants, labor leaders, and community advocates, generations of Latinx residents have strengthened Richmond through their leadership, resilience, and commitment to community.
The City also recognizes the historical significance of the region. Long before colonial settlement, the land now known as Richmond was home to the Huchiun Band of the Ohlone people. Following Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821, portions of present-day Richmond became part of Rancho San Pablo, a land grant awarded to Don Francisco María Castro in 1823. As political boundaries changed over time, the region's residents continued to shape the community's identity and legacy, laying the foundation for the diverse Richmond we know today.
In celebration of this rich heritage, the Cities of Richmond and San Pablo partnered to host the 2026 Fiestas Patrias Parade and Celebration. The event brought together residents, families, businesses, and community organizations to commemorate Latin American independence, celebrate cultural traditions, and promote unity through music, dance, food, art, and civic engagement.
The City of Richmond is proud to recognize Latinx Heritage Month and extend its appreciation to the organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and participants whose dedication made the 2026 Fiestas Patrias Parade and Celebration a meaningful community event that celebrates the City's diversity and reflects Richmond's ongoing commitment to inclusion, cultural understanding, and civic pride.
