City Council
259 N. Wilma Avenue
Ripon, CA 95366
MEMO
To: Honorable City Council
From: James Pease, Public Works Director
Date: 07/12/2022
Subject: Sidewalk Maintenance Repair Contract Change Order 1

RECOMMENDATION
Approve Change Order No. 1 in the not to exceed amount of $15,000 to modify driveway entrances on Wilma Avenue. (Funding Source: Street & Road Operating Fund)

BACKGROUND
In 2021, the Wilma Avenue Driveway Project was completed to reduce the volume and frequency of storm water runoff that flows onto private property during the most intense storms.

Modifications were made at three driveway entrances on Wilma Avenue and while the work mitigated additional runoff onto the private residences, the drive over curb installed at each driveway approach has made it difficult for small cars to drive over.

DISCUSSION
Staff has discussed various options to mitigate this issue with the property owners. It’s recommended that the City’s on-call sidewalk contractor remove the existing drive over curb/gutter and replace with a curb that would extend to the current edge of asphalt to provide a slope that is not as steep as what is currently in place. The proposed drive over curb would have a pipe located along the gutter flow line to allow storm water to pass.

This proposed drive over curb is planned to be completed at 522 Wilma Ave where a concrete driveway currently exists. The property located at 506 Wilma Ave does not have a concrete driveway. For this property it is proposed that the current drive over curb be removed and replaced with an asphalt drive over curb with a more reasonable slope. The property owner located at 552 Wilma Ave is evaluating the ultimate use for their property and has elected to leave the driveway entrance as is at this time.

Staff is recommending the City Council approve a change order with Vaughan Construction in the amount of $15,000 to complete the proposed improvements.

FISCAL IMPACT
The attached Change Order No. 1 is in the not to exceed amount of $15,000 and will be funded through the Street & Road Operating Fund.
