MEMO
To: Honorable City Council
From: Ken Zuidervaart, Planning Director
Date: 10/11/2022
Subject: Ripon Senior Center Rehab Project - Shade Structure RECOMMENDED ACTION:

City Council to approve the purchase of one (1) Landmark Shade Shelter through Park Planet.

BACKGROUND:

For the past several years now the City of Ripon has been allocating our yearly allotment of CDBG funds towards a façade improvement project for the Ripon Senior Center. The project includes the construction of an approximately 1,300 square foot outdoor dining area with shade structure on the southeast corner of the existing Ripon Senior Center parcel. The proposed shade structure will feature light fixtures and ceiling fans as well as a surrounding stucco privacy wall.

Existing landscaping in the project area will be removed. A new door opening, converted from existing windows from within the facility, will provide access to the newly constructed outdoor dining area.

Additional project amenities will include re-landscaping of the entire front and side of the Ripon Senior Center, rehabilitation and updating of the front building façade, including modification of the existing parapet roof, removal of existing stone veneer on the front office portion and replacing with wood plank siding, revamping the front concrete walkway and access to the new outdoor patio area, updating the signage for the center, updating of the facility’s heating and air conditioning, etc.

DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:

Staff anticipates going out to bid for this project sometime late this calendar year (2022) or early next year (2023). The shade structure has a lengthy lead-time of 7 to 9 months; therefore, staff is recommending ordering this item ahead of the bid. The timing as to when the project will go out to bid, which will include the installation of the shade structure, will be determined based on the delivery of the shade structure.

Staff is recommending the City Council approve the purchase of the shade structure at this time.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The cost to purchase the one (1) Landmark Shade Shelter is $34,677.90. The entire amount will be covered by CDBG grant funds allocated for this project.
