MEMO
To: Honorable City Council
From: James Pease, Public Works Director
Date: 07/11/2023
Subject: Donation
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Accept the donation from Michael White of a commemorative plaque describing the 1960 Winter Olympic Games replica Olympic Torch and its historical significance to the City of Ripon and approve the relocation of the torch from the Community Center to the Museum by Public Works staff (donation: $1,431.71).
BACKGROUND:
The City of Ripon was used as a waypoint for the Olympic Torch on its journey to Squaw Valley for the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. A replica Olympic Torch was constructed and located at the Community Center Park on Fourth Street commemorating this event.
DISCUSSION:
Mr. White would like to donate a commemorative plaque describing the significance of the replica Olympic Torch to the City of Ripon. Additionally, Mr. White has communicated to staff that he is requesting the replica Olympic Torch be moved from its current location at the Community Center Park to the front entrance of the Clarence Smit Museum located at 430 W.
Main Street. According to Mr. White, this is where the torch was located in 1960 when the Olympic torch passed through Ripon and the commemorative torch was lit. The Ripon Historical Society has been made aware of the move and has no objections to the relocation.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The fiscal impact will range between approximately $800 and $1,200 for Public Works staff time to relocate the Olympic Torch and provide a concrete pedestal for the new plaque.
