Ripon, CA 95366
MEMO
To: Honorable City Council
From: James Pease, Public Works Director
Date: 10/10/2023
Subject: Tree Pruning Maintenance Project
RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Approve and authorize the Mayor to sign the contract with Grover Tree Service in the amount of $35,175 to provide tree pruning/removal maintenance in multiple parks and landscaped areas (funding source: expenses paid through the various funds currently used to fund the landscape maintenance where the work is planned).

DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:

City public works staff is responsible for maintaining a large number of trees at multiple parks, tot lots, landscape medians, parkways and various City owned facilities. Although a portion of work is performed by our Public Works staff, outside services are needed to safely and efficiently provide maintenance once the trees reach a certain size and height. Staff inspects the landscaped areas throughout the City annually to determine what tree maintenance is necessary and a contract is developed to perform this work. Many of the larger mature trees have deadwood and heavy laterals that pose a safety risk to people and public/private property and these areas are prioritized first.

The attached maintenance contract with Grover Tree Service will address the following:

Stouffer Park
- 28 trees, trim and remove all major deadwood around the upper section of the park.
- 2 trees, remove and grind stumps.

Oak Avenue Park / Mistlin Fountain
- 3 trees, trim and remove deadwood, thin canopy and clear power pole - 7 trees, remove and grind stumps.

Main Street (between Wilma Ave and Acacia Ave)
- 11 sycamore trees, trim and lift canopies, thin and remove suckers and broken hangers, clear street lights and shape trees.
- 4 palm trees, trim and remove seed pods.

Main Street (between Acacia Ave and Industrial Ave)
- 63 crape myrtle trees, trim and elevate for pedestrian and vehicle clearances, cut back from buildings/structures/lights, remove suckers and thin.

Once the work to remove the trees at Stouffer and Oak Avenue Parks is complete, public works staff will plant a combination of trees and shrubs to fill in the gaps in the landscaping.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The attached maintenance project has a not to exceed cost of $35,175 which will be paid for through the funds currently used to fund the landscape maintenance of the area where the work is planned, as summarized below:

Parks General Capital Fund: $24,245
Street & Road Landscape Maintenance Fund: $3,250
Main Street Landscape Maintenance District Fund: $7,680 Attachments:
