PRESENTATION OF PROCLAMATIONS
San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors Chairman Canape said he had the idea to mark San Joaquin County’s 175th anniversary with visits across the County, including a stop in Supervisor Rickman’s district, to honor local communities and their leaders. He described Ripon native June Sand’s original County seal design and a new seal created by a youth in juvenile hall, symbolizing the County’s growth and future. Canape recognized several County representatives, staff and administrators who were present and highlighted some of the County’s achievements including serving over 800,000 residents, employing 8,000 people, and registering over 400,000 voters.

San Joaquin County Supervisor Rickman said he has seen how hard the members of the Council work to secure state and federal funding for roads, transportation and infrastructure. He said this milestone honored the County’s shared history, progress and vision for the future, with special pride in Ripon’s journey from a small riverside settlement to the almond capital of the world.

Philip Merlo, Executive Director of the San Joaquin County Historical Museum said that the region’s agricultural history is nationally significant, with fertile soils and strong irrigation systems making it one of the best places in the world for small business farming. He added that diverse communities, including Dutch, Portuguese, and Swiss-Italian immigrants, have built their American dream here, and that remembering this history fosters civic pride.

City Council Page 8 August 12, 2025
Connie Jorgensen, Curator for the Clarence Smit Museum and Ripon Historical Society, shared that the Almond Blossom Festival began in 1963 following the 1962 Simpson Paper Company celebration, and that the upcoming event will mark its 64th year. She noted the festival has evolved over time, once featuring activities such as wrestling matches, tractor pulls, yo-yo contests and almond tastings, with anywhere from four to ten queen candidates.

Chairman Canape presented a Certificate of Recognition to the City of Ripon.

Mayor de Graaf presented a proclamation to Chairman Canape honoring San Joaquin County’s 175th Anniversary.
de Graaf presented a proclamation to Ripon Christian High School, recognizing the Ripon Christian Boys’ Volleyball team and the Co-Ed Tennis team for their outstanding athletic accomplishments.
