City Administrator Werner presented two invoices from Stantec Consulting for engineering services related to the investigation of Well 19. He said the study evaluated elevated nitrate and chromium-6 levels and the feasibility of isolating aquifer zones to improve water quality. Werner said the consultant determined that the approach was not practical because the affected zones were too extensive.

Werner explained that Well 19 has remained offline after nitrate levels increased to near the maximum contaminant level shortly after it was placed into service. He stated that chromium-6 can be treated using granular activated carbon, while nitrate treatment is significantly more expensive due to disposal requirements. Werner noted that groundwater recharge, blending with surface water, and improvements to nearby private wells remain the most practical long-term strategies for improving groundwater quality.
