The City has received $1,473,215 in Beverage Container Recycling funds to date.

DISCUSSION:

The California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act administered by the Department of Resources and Recycling Recovery (CalRecycle) distributes $10.5 million in Fiscal Year 2023/24 for the grant cycle. The funds are available to cities and counties for beverage container recycling and litter clean-up activities.

CalRecycle's beverage container recycling program aims to reach and maintain an 80% recycling rate for all California Refund Value (CRV) beverage containers - aluminum, glass, plastic, and bi-metal. The current grant application is due January 17, 2024, and funds are anticipated to be distributed by CalRecycle in April 2024. The funds received will be used to target and develop programs to meet the goal of increased recycling. Activities will include supporting curbside recycling collection efforts using containers, flyers, utility inserts, and advertisements.

The City of Riverside is eligible to receive $78,666 in funding for Fiscal Year 2023/24, based on the per capita formula for distribution, which may be used over two years for the following activities:

Purchase of curbside recycling containers for residential customers.

Outreach to schools to provide recycling education and presentations.

Development of new promotional and educational materials to inform residents.

Increasing public education within the community and citywide departments to promote beverage container recycling.
