Please state the reason(s) you would like to serve on this legislative body.
I consider Hart Center's programs to be one of the City's most valuable services to the community. (I have been attending in some aspect since the early 1990s, and I have participated in many activities there. Those should be of value in efforts to enhance its mission.) As we face this burgeoning senior demographic (coming at us so rapidly!), the City needs to make really good decisions when prioritizing needs and allotting available funds.
The rather generic nature of my educational and professional background would, I hope, augment the decision making.
Please list all of your professional experience directly related to the seat you are applying for.
I have decades of serving in rather wide-ranging and diverse professional capacities. Geographically, they span five different states (KY,WY,DC,WI, CA) and their academic levels range from kindergarten all the way through graduate level. These experiences have given me a rather broad perspective that should prove useful when called upon to weigh options and advise regarding what programmatic developments will best serve seniors' needs and interests.
Please list any training or education directly related to the seat you are applying for.
My Ph.D. was in curriculum and instruction (very broadly and generally applicable across diverse subject matter and varied learning needs). It carried a specialization in "direct experience" learning (mostly with hands- on science and computer education).
I worked in deaf education for 7 years and gained experiences in adapting learning materials and teaching processes to meet special needs of learners.
I have modified print instruction using "Special English" to better reach learners for whom English is not the first language.
Please list any additional experience, community activities, volunteering experience, or other qualifications that would be helpful in evaluating your application.
I have personally benefited from Hart Center's exercise programs (mostly "Strength and Balance" since the days of Carl and Sandy) and Triple R adult daycare while Nina was there (my husband had Alzheimer's).
I have volunteered for over two decades to the local Alzheimer's Association, serving continuously on its Program and Services Committee since 2001 and for the past 5 years also on its Advocacy Committee.
In 2017 I joined the CSUS Renaissance Society and that led to my developing for RS a 12-session seminar that I have delivered 5 times since 2019 (the last 2 times via Zoom). It is called "Delving into Dementia: the science, the caring, the hope."
I have across the years served out terms on several small nonprofit boards, giving me experience in group deliberation and collaboration, sometimes with people who come from diverse backgrounds, ages, and values.

Please state the reason(s) you would like to serve on this legislative body.
I feel the Hart Center is a critical service for Sacramento . I volunteered there as a social worker from 2010-2013 then became a contractor with Hart and set up the Caring
Neighborhood s program 2013-2016. I would like to help
direct the Trust in service to the Hart Center and Community.
Please list all of your professiona l experience directly related to the seat you are applying for.
I worked with SHRA for 25 years, several of them with
programs serving elders. I am familiar with the elder
population in the city, specifically the low-income population as I was a social worker with senior public housing for several years. Also, I worked at 2 senior centers in
Philadelphia prior to moving to Sacramento in 1982 doing community outreach and case management.
Please list any training or education directly related to the seat you are applying for.
See above education information . I studied Gerontology at the Temple Institute on Aging and received a Certificate in Gerontology in 1982. I've kept my knowledge up to date
doing research on my own during the years since I left SHRA . In addition, I took care of my parents (long-distance ) Both had dementia and I travelled frequently to Ohio to help with their care. That family experience is just as significant as any formal training in Gerontology . I am very familiar with the challenges of caregiving for those with dementia as the disease progresses.
Please list any additional experience, community
activities, volunteerin g experience, or other
qualification s that would be helpful in evaluating your application.
See above in the "reasons" section regarding volunteering and working with the Hart Center from 2010-2016.
