Please state the reason(s) you would like to serve on this legislative body.
My name is Daniel Herrick and I am writing to convey my interest in applying for the open Seat E position on the City of Sacramento’s Preservation Commission.
As a historic preservation/ planning professional and resident/property owner here in Sacramento, I am truly invested in seeing the city continue to develop into a world-class regional center, while also retaining its sense of place. Although my wife and I are relatively new to Sacramento, having moved here 5 years ago, we were instantly drawn to the city’s character formed by the collection of historic neighborhoods, accessible urban parks, proximity to recreational activities, and the refreshingly friendly nature of the community. For these reasons, we have made Sacramento home for our family and I am excited about the potential opportunity to help serve my city.
In my career as an architectural historian and preservation planner, I have several years of experience preparing a variety of historic preservation and environmental compliance/ permitting documents related to projects throughout California and the western states, many of which often involve historic landscapes and the implementation of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines. Since earning my Masters of Heritage Conservation at the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture, I have continued to foster a love and deep appreciation of cultural landscapes and landscape architecture. Landscapes have always had a powerful resonance with me, and classes on landscape architecture (particularly the landscapes of California) were instrumental in formalizing my passion through my studies, which ultimately informed my thesis on cultural landscapes. In my years practicing as an architectural historian, the projects that have piqued my interest the most are those related to landscapes. This has included a variety of projects involving property types that range from grand estate gardens, master-planned urban parks, residential streetscapes, industrial settings, traditional cultural properties, National and State Parks, secluded natural areas, and agricultural properties. The projects I enjoy the most are those that require analysis of historic settings and collaborating with others to find new and creative ways to retain the sense of place, while also meeting the challenges of current and future uses of these spaces, including those related to sustainability, social justice, and other needs of the community.
I believe my passion for cultural landscapes and our community, as well as my professional experience with historic preservation planning practices and processes, make me an ideal candidate for this position on the Preservation Commission. Again, I am truly excited for this opportunity to help our community and look forward to answering any further questions you may have about my application.
Please list all of your professional experience directly related to the seat you are applying for.

Please state the reason(s) you would like to serve on this legislative body.
I grew up in Los Angeles, spent ten years in San Francisco, and am settled in Sacramento - I've lived and loved California my whole life. Reading CA history books while camping in the Sierras is my happy place, and I want to give back as a steward for the place I've called home my whole life. The physical space around us - the land and trees and buildings and roads, are physical reminders of our past and shape our shared future, that's why I've applied for the parks and/or historic commissions.
My experience in public policy, community engagement, and digital strategy, can bring a fresh perspective to some of our oldest collective treasures, and ensure we build a future worth treasuring too. I see so much opportunity to carry the torch of our public places and spaces forward in a more inclusive and equitable way, and would be honored to be a part of it! Please list all of your professional experience directly related to the seat you are applying for.
Coro Fellow In Public Affairs - worked as assistant to the deputy NYC Parks commissioner and saw firsthand how decisions made in board meetings affect our cities and our neighbors.
Co-Founder & CEO of Creative Action Network. Since 2013 I've been running my own company - an e-commerce marketplace for social impact art & design. I see a huge gap in the tools and technologies being used by start-ups and those being used by government, and an exciting opportunity to close those gaps, and bring about more inclusion and equity as a result.
Named in National Geographic's 30 Under 30 National Park Leaders in 2016 for my work around crowdsourcing posters for the national parks.
Winner of National Park Conservation Association's Robin W. Winks Award for Enhancing Public Understanding Of Our National Parks System - 2016.
Co-Author: See America: A Celebration of Our National Parks & Treasured Sites.
Elected Board Member - North Area Neighborhood Development Council (2010-2012 in Los Angeles)
