Please state the reason(s) you would like to serve on this legislative body.
I was born and raised in San Francisco, and I moved to
Sacramento in May 2015 to be a public defender. I
intentionally chose this office because I had fallen in love with Sacramento after many weekends visiting a friend at McGeorge Law School.
I was fortunate to become a home owner in July 2016 and have continued to build my roots in Sacramento and am so proud to call this vibrant city my home.
This legislative body gives me an opportunity to give back to Sacramento in another way beyond being a public defender while also drawing on my experience working with some of the most vulnerable in this city as a public defender. I have had the privilege of working in the collaborative courts here on two different occassions during my career (July 2016- September 2017 and again from October 2019-May 2021). I say this because I have had a unique perspective beyond more traditional public defender work working with both vulnerable individuals and different community
organizations.

Assistant Public Defender, Sacramento County: May 2015- present.
As an assistant public defender, I work with many of the individuals who would be impacted by the way the funds are distributed and have observed first hand how many
community organizations help these individuals.
I have significant experience working with individuals who struggle mental health, drug addiction, continued criminality (usually based on drug addiction) and veterans struggling to reintergrate into the community. This is through my years working as one of the public defenders assigned to the
collaborative courts. I have worked with many organizations in our community that help these individuals succeed. Again, these are organizations who directly work with the same population the Ann Land and Bertha Henschel Memorial
Fund Commission seeks to support.
I have also helped with the pre-trial services program that was created by the public defender's office in 2020. This pilot program is intended to highlight needs of individuals as soon as they are incarcerated and connect them to services in the community so when they are released they have
support to hopefully be successful and avoid further
incarceration.

I served as a board member in the from 2012 - 2017 and

I used to be the Program Manager for a nonprofit called Everyone Matters Ministries. It is a nonprofit organization that worked with the homeless to find transitional housing.
In that role, I oversaw the Case Management, Food Ministry and Maintenance Departments. This was a part-time
position that ended in October 2021 because management
wanted a full-time program manager. From 8/04 to 10/14 I was a Compliance Analyst for HUD performing on-site
compliance reviews ensuring that that property managers and owners was operating in accordance with HUD's Rules & Guidelines. Part of the review was working with Resident Service Coordinators to ensure that residents has access to resources (employment, education, social, etc.) and that the programs were evaluated as it related to the services
delivered.
