Description/Analysis
Issue Detail: In June of 2021, the Department of Community Response and the River District Property and Business Improvement Districts (PBID) began partnering on the Clean and Safe Pilot Program. The program to hires individuals experiencing homelessness who currently live in any one of the homeless shelters located in the River District. Participants are paid an hourly wage to collect trash from homeless encampments located in the River District. The program currently has six employees working five days a week, Monday - Friday.
Between June of 2021 and the end of January, program participants removed 120 tons of trash and debris. In addition, the employees report that the job has given them purpose, job skills and helped in their recovery from homelessness. In fact, two participants are no longer in a shelter and both live independently in affordable housing.
