Thank you for allowing House Sacramento the opportunity to comment on the proposedAffordable Housing Project at 490 and 492 Arden Way. We are writing in support of thisproposed development, and support staff’s recommendation for declaring that the City-ownedproperty located at 490 and 492 Arden Way as “exempt surplus land” and transferring theproperty to the State of California.
House Sacramento is an organization formed to advocate for building inclusively affordablecommunities in the Sacramento area. We formed to represent renters, young people, and othercommunities disproportionately harmed by NIMBYism and California’s long standing culture ofopposition to developing adequate housing supply. The proposed project provides much neededaffordable housing in a neighborhood where demand for such housing far exceeds supply. Theproject also has additional community benefits including commercial space for childcare.
The project is directly adjacent to a light rail station and along a commercial corridor - the placesour plans and policies have been directing housing. This infill housing will improve residents’mobility, reduce VMT, and improve local air quality and carbon emissions.
Simply put, if we can’t agree to build housing on underutilized and unused public landsat no cost to the City, we are never going to solve our housing crisis. This is the lowhanging fruit that we need to take advantage of as a community. We need to maximize housingopportunities at sites like this and take advantage of the resources made available by the State.Cutting 20 units here and 20 units there is how we got into this crisis - its not a path we can useto dig it ourselves out.
Pro-housing groups like House Sacramento are glad to have an opportunity to speak up forgroups often unrepresented in housing decisions. City Council approval of this agenda item is inthe best interests of the people of Sacramento, as emphasized by this project’s consistency with
the vision for abundant housing set out in the General Plan. We heartily offer our support for theproposed Project and property transfer.
