1-Description/Analysis:

Issue Detail: As Sacramento’s population grows, increased greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change. The main contributor of this is through vehicles and industries. This will result in a shift in global temperature and weather patterns due to the heat-trapping gasses. Moreover, human activities further accelerate the change in climate weather patterns. If left to continue its own pathway, it will negatively affect many elements of our world such as the ecosystem and food production.

Policies align with the 2035 General Plan to consider necessary changes in people’s everyday lifestyle in efforts to reduce Sacramento’s carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. This also includes the Climate Action for Internal Operations 2016 plan to reduce GHG emissions. This is supported by a focus towards photovoltaic installations.

Solar energy can reduce energy expenses to power electricity. Installing solar panels will utilize and generate energy from the sun in replace of fossil fuels, which can fluctuate because of changing oil prices, to make electricity and thereby reduce payment for the cost of electricity. Additionally, due to peak hours, running appliances during different times of the day can lead to an increase in the electricity bill. However, investing in solar panels will eliminate said expenses, allowing appliance usage whenever and will overall ensure one less financial burden.

The PSA and billboard will address and encourage solar energy usage to reduce the negative effects of climate change, notably greenhouse gas emissions and global warming pollution.

Youth reporting their concerns about greenhouse gas emissions contribute to ideas expressed by the Sustainability Master Plan. This meets the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 greenhouse gas emissions from City operations by 25% to 60,000 metric tons.

The public needs to be aware of the effects of their behaviors for the climate and change and regulate their actions accordingly. Electricity generation and heat production account for 28% of Sacramento’s greenhouse gas emissions. If our actions are left unchecked, Sacramento will feel the drastic effects of climate change including our ecosystems and health.
