Issue Detail: The IT Department is restructuring the information technology support staff assigned to supporting the public safety departments. To better serve and support these efforts, the IT Department recommends deleting 1.0 FTE vacant Senior Information Technology Support Specialist and adding 2.0 FTE Information Technology Trainee positions. The addition of two Information Technology Trainees will improve IT service delivery and allow for sufficient coverage to address staff shortages without adversely impacting public safety operations.

Rationale for Recommendation: Adding two Information Technology Trainees will provide an entry level path into a technical career field that is responsible for managing centralized IT Service Desk, computer hardware and software support operations, and other IT support requirements including IT asset management. This action will complement the department’s established student internship recruiting strategy and will create journey level career paths for candidates that will be trained and mentored creating a pool of internal candidates with IT experience for further advancement to senior IT positions.
Financial Considerations: The costs associated with deleting the 1.0 FTE vacant Senior IT Support Specialist and adding 2.0 FTE IT Trainees are $503. The IT Department Operating Budget (Department ID 07001014) will be reduced by this amount to cover the cost of the realignment.
