Review of Applicants for the Sacramento Disabilities Advisory Commission File ID: 2024-00296

Recommendation: 1) Conduct interviews of applicants to Sacramento Disabilities Advisory Commission for Seat F: a member appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies; 2) discuss candidates eligibility; and 3) recommend appointment to Mayor and Council unless additional discussion in a subsequent meeting is needed.

Issue Detail: Prior to forwarding nominations to the Mayor for appointment, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of applicants for open board and commission positions.
Policy Considerations: Members are appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies.

Rationale for Recommendation: When a position on a City board or commission becomes available through term expiration or resignation, the Office of the City Clerk conducts a recruitment for interested parties. When the application period has closed, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of the applicants and forwards nominations to the Mayor for appointment. The appointment is then confirmed by the whole council.

I have been working in my community with kids with special abilities for a long time now be it working with my own child, volunteering at SDC class in local school or coaching in TOPSoccer program. It has been a passion of mine after I had a child with disability. I feel like I can make a bigger impact by serving on a Disability Advisory Commission (DAC) because it will allow me to advocate for the rights and needs of
individuals with disabilities. I can work towards creating policies and initiatives that promote inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities. Being part of a commission will enable me to empower individuals with disabilities by ensuring their voices are heard by helping shape decisions that directly impact their lives, promoting their independence, well-being, and overall quality of life. DAC plays a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting education about disabilities. I want to contribute to public outreach efforts, by organizing events, workshops, and campaigns that promote understanding,
acceptance, and inclusion.

TOPSoccer program director/coordinator for NatomasFA: I started The Outreach Program for Soccer (TOPSoccer) program in 2020, which is a community-based training program for all athletes with intellectual, emotional and physical disabilities. I have been recruiting students from Natomas area high school to volunteer as buddies for program participants.
I was the recipient of Tim Haley Recognition Award for my work with this program, which was awarded by the DAC.
I am a team member of California Community Engagement
Initiative network where the main focus is on increasing the ability and capacity to implement effective, equitable and culturally responsive community engagement practices.
Currently, I am serving as the Vice President of Punjabi American Heritage Society, Sacramento Chapter which focuses on promoting cross-cultural diversity and equity in the community

Having a child with disabilities gives you a real life
training/education. My son was a micro preemie with
dysphagia and autism. It took me a while to accept, learn about his disabilities and a lot of effort to explore resources that can help him. I learnt how to create opportunities for him, what resources are available for him, how to navigate the school system and even to help him get basic services.
