Description/Analysis
Issue Detail: The cost of rent in Sacramento County has increased dramatically in the past four years which has impacted the cost of rental assistance for families participating in the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program. It has increased more than 50 percent during this time. Staff from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have been meeting monthly with staff since February and have directed the Housing Authority to begin efforts immediately to stay within the budget parameters allocated to Sacramento. This presentation will discuss funds projected for fiscal year 2024, the anticipated shortfall and the steps the Housing Authority has taken to reduce the amount of subsidies paid out this year.

Congress approved the budget for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on March 9, 2024, and is expected to notify each public housing authority of their allocated award by May 8, 2024. Housing Authority staff will return to the Housing Authority Board on June 11, 2024, to provide a budget update for the HCV Program.
