Review of Applicants for the Sacramento Disabilities Advisory Commission File ID: 2024-01197

Recommendation: 1) Conduct interviews of applicants to Sacramento Disabilities Advisory Commission for Seats D and E: a member appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies; 2) discuss candidates eligibility; and 3) recommend appointment to Mayor and Council unless additional discussion in a subsequent meeting is needed.

Issue Detail: Prior to forwarding nominations to the Mayor for appointment, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of applicants for open board and commission positions.
Policy Considerations: Members are appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies.

Rationale for Recommendation: When a position on a City board or commission becomes available through term expiration or resignation, the Office of the City Clerk conducts a recruitment for interested parties. When the application period has closed, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of the applicants and forwards nominations to the Mayor for appointment. The appointment is then confirmed by the whole council.

I serve as the executive director of a non-profit, Sisters of the Creative Divine, and we formed to elevate several facets of the community. We have hosted events and clothing drives to help the unhoused residents of Sacramento. We are currently offering classes for fitness and self defense for women. Our free business and finance classes start in May of this year.

I desire to return to the City of Sacramento Disability Advisory Commission in order to represent those like myself who live and work with a disability. I am legally blind and a guide dog handler. In all that I do, I try to up lift the voices of others, and when asked to I lend my voice in support of others as well. I believe firmly in civic engagement, and that we are better together through the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Civic engagement is a way of giving back and paying it forward. I love living in Sacramento, and I want to support the evolutionary change I see however
accessibility, inclusion, and equity need to be infused into the evolutionary change. I want to provide my perspective to the city through the commission, but I also wish to learn through the commission as well; I believe this service flows two ways.
In my service on the UC Board of Regents, I have uplifted the voices of students with disabilities in an effort to evolve the university to be more accessible and inclusive.
