Review of Applicants for the Utilities Rate Advisory Commission File ID: 2024-01199

Recommendation: 1) Conduct interviews of applicants to Utilities Rate Advisory Commission for Seats F and G: a member appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies; 2) discuss candidates eligibility; and 3) recommend appointment to Mayor and Council unless additional discussion in a subsequent meeting is needed.

Issue Detail: Prior to forwarding nominations to the Mayor for appointment, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of applicants for open board and commission positions.
Policy Considerations: Members are appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies.
Economic Impacts: None.

Rationale for Recommendation: When a position on a City board or commission becomes available through term expiration or resignation, the Office of the City Clerk conducts a recruitment for interested parties. When the application period has closed, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of the applicants and forwards nominations to the Mayor for appointment. The appointment is then confirmed by the whole council.

I previously served on the Utilities Rates Advisory Commission (2016-2018), and I enjoyed serving on the commission; I learned a great deal from the experience. I was motivated the first time to serve on the commission because at that time their weren't any renters on the commission, and while
typically we renters pay the city utility rates indirectly through our rental payments we are impacted by the rates and
services. I still have that same motivation to serve by representing the voice of renters on the commission, but also I wish to return to the commission because I enjoy civic
engagement. I regularly attend legislative hearings in the capitol that peak my interest as well as city commissions. I am currently serving on the UC Board of Regents, and my term ends in July, so I am seeking some other civic engagement opportunities to fill my free time. I believe civic engagement is a key way to give back to the community and pay it forward; we have to be involved and engaged with our communities including the city government. Thank you for giving such serious consideration to serve the city in this way.
