Review of Applicants for the Sacramento Environmental Commission

Recommendation: 1) Conduct interviews of applicants to the Sacramento Environmental Commission for Seat C: a member appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies; 2) discuss candidates eligibility; and 3) recommend appointment to Mayor and Council unless additional discussion in a subsequent meeting is needed.

Issue Detail: Prior to forwarding nominations to the Mayor for appointment, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of applicants for open board and commission positions.
Policy Considerations: Members are appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies.

Rationale for Recommendation: When a position on a City board or commission becomes available through term expiration or resignation, the Office of the City Clerk conducts a recruitment for interested parties. When the application period has closed, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of the applicants and forwards nominations to the Mayor for appointment. The appointment is then confirmed by the whole council.

this legislative body.
As is evidenced by the long list of organizations I have supported since returning to the U.S. in 2013, I feel strongly about community engagement. I believe finding causes we are passionate about and investing our time and energy into our communities is incredibly important, perhaps now more than ever given our current state of affairs, both locally and beyond. This sentiment extends to my career first and
foremost, where I get to help solve complex infrastructure challenges at the nexus of sustainability and facilitate project implementation while minimizing impacts to the natural and built environment—things I love doing. Though it also extends to my spirit of volunteerism, particularly at the local level, where I am most effectively able to help to solve some of our own environmental challenges experienced and generate
enthusiasm about environmental causes in this city that has become my home. It is for this reason that I would like to continue in my current seat for another term as a member of the Sacramento Environmental Commission.

Have been serving as an Environmental Planner and Project Manager at Jacobs since 2015. In this role, I am responsible for environmental planning and permitting, including achieving CEQA, NEPA, and regulatory permitting compliance for
proposed projects, as well as fulfilling project management responsibilities to ensure successful project delivery. The majority of my work to-date has focused on facilitating expansion of and improvements to water infrastructure across California and beyond, though I have also supported a number of transportation, rail, aviation, utility, and Federal projects.
Before starting in my current role, I served as both a Graduate Student Researcher and a Graduate T eaching Assistant while attending grad school. In the former role, I conducted several international research assignments in countries across Latin America and served as a research assistant supporting a professor’s qualitative research study on an underserved community in Denver. As a teaching assistant, I was
responsible for delivering lectures, leading discussions, grading homework, papers, and exams, monitoring students’ overall progress, and providing guidance to students, as- needed. I also served as a T eacher of English as a Foreign Language overseas for 2 years prior to starting grad school.
