Review of Applicants for the Planning and Design Commission

Recommendation: 1) Conduct interviews of applicants to Planning and Design Commission for Seats K and L: members appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies; 2) discuss candidates eligibility; and 3) recommend appointment to Mayor and Council unless additional discussion in a subsequent meeting is needed.

Issue Detail: Prior to forwarding nominations to the Mayor for appointment, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of applicants for open board and commission positions.
Policy Considerations: Members are appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies.
Economic Impacts: None.

Rationale for Recommendation: When a position on a City board or commission becomes available through term expiration or resignation, the Office of the City Clerk conducts a recruitment for interested parties. When the application period has closed, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of the applicants and forwards nominations to the Mayor for appointment. The appointment is then confirmed by the whole council.

I have served in this seat for the past four months and have been honored to serve my beloved city this way. I am so energized and engaged when reviewing the materials and
participating in the meetings; this feels like such a meaningful way to contribute to my fellow citizens. My fellow
commissioners and the city staff are a wonderful group to work with. I’ll now re-share the reasons I listed when I first applied four months ago:
Watching and participating in Sacramento’s transformation and growth over the past twenty years that I’ve lived here has been an actualization of much of the idealism of my time in architecture and planning school.
I moved here from the Midwest and immediately got to move into co-housing, become a year-round bicycle commuter, and dive into creating local, affordable housing through my work with Mogavero Architects.
I have spent time in various realms of advocacy in Sacramento including topics like infill development, active transportation, affordable housing, urban agriculture, nature connection and green building in a carbon-constrained future. These areas of interest and expertise all relate to urban development and planning. I am interested in serving the City of Sacramento by bringing together my experience in these advocacy areas and my expertise as an Architect and Urban Planner.
