Sacramento Youth Commission 2024 Annual Report Page 6 of 16 Message from the Sacramento Youth Commission Chair and Vice Chair

Dear Sacramento Youth Commission Constituents,
Our names are Reyes Rios and Stormee Burgan and we proudly serve as Chair and Vice Chair of the Sacramento Youth Commission. From our humble founding in 1993 to our current state, the Sacramento Youth Commission has completed an immense amount of work regarding the well-being of youth within the City of Sacramento. Since its beginnings, the main priority of the commission has been to uplift the voices of youth in Sacramento, and we have continued to do so. This past year, through our three focus areas, the Aggie Square Project, Youth Mental Health, and Sacramento Youth Voice, we have made an extensive amount of progress. In the Aggie Square Project, the Sacramento Youth Commission has ensured that the input of youth was heard and considered regarding the programs offered at the new groundbreaking community hub. In the Youth Mental Health focus area, we have created a youth mental health guide providing resources and hotlines specific to youth struggling with their mental health. In the Sacramento Youth Voice focus area, a survey was created to help the commission accurately pinpoint issues within certain communities and districts in Sacramento. The Sacramento Youth Commission worked in cooperation with the Sacramento Children's Fund and Oversight Commission regarding the allocation of money in the Sacramento Children's Fund to benefit the futures of youth and to assist in relieving issues holding them back from thriving in Sacramento.

In 2025, we will expand our reach on youth in Sacramento by collecting more valuable data, engaging in community outreach, and involving them in advocating for youth voices. We expect to accomplish this by partnering with community-based organizations to collect data first-hand from youth, engaging with youth in person to bring our work to light, and encouraging youth to get involved in their communities and local government. We recognize that we are not only the leaders of tomorrow but the leaders of today; and our immense passion for providing justice for youth in all eight districts of Sacramento continues to drive the Sacramento Youth Commission forward into the future.

Yours Sincerely, Reyes Rios and Stormee Burgan

A. Sacramento Youth Voice Survey
To be better attuned to the needs of the youth citywide the commission developed a Youth Survey to give Sacramento youth an opportunity to share their thoughts and op inions on how they feel about their community. The survey data serves as a tool for the commission to inform City Council when providing their advice and recommendations. The survey can be found on the Sacramento Youth Commission landing pages on the city website.

B. Aggie Square Youth Listening Sessions
The UC Davis Aggie Square , Wexford Science, and the Sacramento Commission Youth partnership began in 2022 with the creation of the Aggie Square Ad Hoc. This continued collaboration has given way to the formation of two listening sessions. In March 2024, the Youth Commission Focus Area hosted their first of two listening sessions at West Campus High School with over 30 youth in attendance. Commissioners facilitated peer group discussions centered around what youth programming, resources and supports would benefit youth at Uc Davis Aggie Square Innovation Hub. Fall 2024, the commission will host and facilitate their second listening session.

The Sacramento Children Fund and Oversight Commission is t asked to draft a Strategic Investment Plan in collaboration with the Sacramento Youth Commission. The plan will outline how funding will be allocated for youth programs and services throughout the city. Throughout 2024, both commissions held three joint and special meetings to drill down the specifics of the plan and ensure youth voice and youth needs are a central part of the plan.
