Issue Detail: Prior to forwarding nominations to the Mayor and Council for confirmation of appointment, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of applicants for open board and commission positions.
Policy Considerations: Members are appointed in the manner provided by the Charter of the City of Sacramento for the appointment of members of City boards, commissions, and agencies.

Rationale for Recommendation: When a position on a City board or commission becomes available through term expiration or resignation, the Office of the City Clerk conducts a recruitment for interested parties. When the application period has closed, the Personnel and Public Employees Committee conducts interviews of the applicants and forwards nominations to the Mayor for appointment. The appointment is then confirmed by the whole council.

Every day I read the heartbreaking news that shelters are over
flowing with animals by no fault of their own, and that is exactly what is motivating me to apply for this seat. I have a deep interest and love for animals of all kinds, especially those relegated to shelters. I am passionate about doing whatever I can to improve their chances of becoming adopted and living their best lives. I have worked hand in hand over the past 12 years as an experienced volunteer for a national beagle rescue organization. I have been directly involved with rescuing cats, dogs, bunnies, goats, etc from research facilities to ensure they are not summarily euthanized. I am currently a foster , rescuer , rehabilitator , transporter and adopter for Beagle Freedom Project. As a volunteer , I have also advocated for the ethical treatment of animals, and we were successful in pushing the Right to Release law requiring laboratory test subjects to be released to a rescue organization--a law that was passed in the State of California--even against the highly paid animal testing facilities' lobbyists. After serving on a high school booster board as well as a youth water polo recreation program as a founding member of that board, I understand the decorum and processes related to boards and commissions, and the need to understand and abide by the rules of procedure to accomplish the goals of the organization to help animals both at the shelter and in the community. I am definitely interested in increasing and
improving spay neuter resources across the region as this is one essential way to curb the overpopulation problem. I am prolific in sharing shelter messages and forwarding local shelter posts from social media because I believe that exposure saves lives! I believe my multi-faceted experience as a volunteer and
contributor to the community would be valuable to the Animal Wellbeing Commission from day one.

I have lived in Sacramento for almost eight years and would like to contribute to the community. I have a long-time interest in the wellbeing of animals as well as wanting to help shelters improve their practices to better serve non-human animals and people. I have animal sheltering experience as a volunteer and as staff. I currently work (as a contracted scientist) in an animal welfare laboratory at Purdue University. I have also worked with companion animals and their caretakers for the last 25 years and understand the importance of the human-animal bond and doing what we can to prevent animals from entering the shelter system due to behavior . As a scientist I am very interested in evidence-based practices and in using data to support decision- making. However, every community is different, and local values and needs must also be taken into consideration. Although I have not been on any government commissions, I have been on the Board of Directors for a for-profit business (Rainbow Grocery), and for two non-profit organizations (Women's Action to Gain Economic Security, Oakland and Mission Meow).
