To Whom it May Concern,
Marlys Maher was a long-time member of The Friends of the Salinas Public Library. She believed in the mission of The Friends, a non-profit, public- benefit organization of volunteers who provide contributions to the Salinas Public Library.

These fund programs and purchases not within the library budget. The Friends also work to create public awareness of and community support for the library system and its programs.

As I began my tenure as an officer of the Friends 15 years ago, Marlys was there as a mentor and colleague. She shared her work as a volunteer in the Annual Big Book Sale which provided residents with books at low cost and money from the sale for the library system. I was the new FOSPL secretary and she also "showed me the ropes" of how to report carefully to the board. She edited my minutes to ensure clear goals and motions reflected our discussions
What I also remember was the friendship and leadership Marlys gave in support of Elizabeth Martinez as the Head Librarian at the Salinas Public Library. Marlys used her many years of knowing Salinas to assist Elizabeth who was new to the community, but not to libraries. This was vital as the library system was under the real prospect of closing permanently!
Marlys was not only a friend to The Friends, but a support of the entire library system. Marlys was there for the residents of Salinas as she wore many hats to boost the missions of the library and The Friends.

Respectfully,

City Clerk of Salinas Patricia Barajas
City Hall
200 Lincoln Avenue
Salinas, CA 93901
Dear Ms. Barajas,
This letter is in support of the proposed naming of a room in the John Steinbeck Library for Marlys Maher. Marlys was an ardent advocate for libraries, for good government and for voter education. She lived in Salinas, worked until retirement as a librarian at Hartnell College, and was devoted to the community.

She helped establish the Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries. She also took an active part in the Measure V campaign to restore the City of Salinas's library services after a financial crisis reduced its hours to 13 a week. A reporter once described her advocacy style as: "Salinas librarian comes out swinging."
Marlys was a longtime member of the League of Women Voters of the Salinas Valley (now combined into the League of Women Voters of Monterey County). She served in many roles in that organization including President and Voter Service Chair. In the early 1990's, she helped lead a two-year joint study by the Salinas Valley League and the Monterey League regarding public libraries, culminating in 1993 in our League's position on libraries, which remains the current League position, available at htt ps:// my.lwv.org/california/monterey county/libraries.

Because Marlys worked so tirelessly for the Salinas libraries, and for the ideals of good government, citizenship and education, we request that a room in the John Steinbeck Library be named in her honor.

Sincerely,
·mdMI~ h au10vn,
Marianne Gawain
President, League of Women Voters of Monterey County
