10 PORTSMOUTH SQUARE RENOVATION | CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO, CA Client: San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department
Reference: Noah Z. Levy, RA, Project Manager, (626) 652-6633, [email protected] Period of Performance: 2021 - 2026
The Recreation & Parks Department of San Francisco has retained MEI Architects in a joint venture with SWA Group to undertake an improvements project for Chinatown’s historic plaza, Portsmouth Square. Centered in the densest community in the City, Portsmouth Square plays a vital role in the lives of the local community residents, over 40% of whom live in single-occupancy units. The joint venture team led a year-long community engagement planning and concept design phase to envision the park for future generations that included public workshops, and working with community groups and key stakeholders, and coordinating with city agencies.

The scope of work, a re-visioning of the park above the existing garage structure, will include new plantings, paving, playground areas, lighting and furnishings, a new community clubhouse with a large assembly area, restrooms and smaller meeting rooms. The Clubhouse, envisioned as a ‘lantern’ for the square, is sited on the corner of Washington and Kearny streets. A solid concrete core at the west side of the building, serving as the main building entry, includes the renovated garage elevator bank and community meeting and conference area, and opens to a lofty two-story transparent community space, open to the plaza at the south.

The project is currently in the permitting phase. MEI Architects is the designer of the new community clubhouse and is acting as the project manager for the team and is also coordinating the team of professional consultants and collaborating with SWA Group to develop the vision for the park.

Comments
Today is Monday
April 22. Work started onsite at 7am.

The Sub Contractor Platinum Dirt Worx continued working on the Dormitory
Building pad. Eric Montano from G&G Builders was onsite at approximately 11 am. as the Superintendent. The concrete sub contractor Dryco was also onsite and continued to build forms around the Community Building pad and dig trenches for plumbing and utilities throughout the day. There were deliveries of base rock for the Dormitory Building pad throughout the day from Golden Bay Trans Inc. Platinum Dirt Worx continued to build up,
grade, level and compact the Dormitory Building pad and also excavated the bioswale are. I asked the operator if they should have the Geotechs onsite to for the excavation and his reply was that he didn't know.. I then asked Edic the Superintendent if Geotechs needed to be onsite. He replied they would call them if they needed. I have attached pictures of all work today.
