PROCLAMATION OF THE
MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
PROCLAIMING APRIL 2024, AS
SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH
IN THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO
WHEREAS, nationally, one in three women and one in four men will experience some form of sexual assault in their lifetime, highlighting the pervasive nature of this issue and the urgent need for action; and,
WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month draws attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and has implications for every community member, underscoring the importance of collective efforts to address and prevent it; and, WHEREAS, there is compelling evidence that we can be successful in reducing sexual violence through prevention education, increased awareness, and holding perpetrators who commit acts of violence responsible for their actions, emphasizing the power of education and accountability in combating this issue; and, WHEREAS, we must work together to educate our community about what can be done to prevent sexual assault and how to support survivors, recognizing the crucial role of education and support in creating a safer environment for all; and, WHEREAS, anyone can be a leader in preventing and ending sexual violence. As employers, educators, parents, and friends, we all have an obligation to uphold the basic principle that every individual should be free from violence and fear, acknowledging the shared responsibility of every community member in addressing and preventing sexual assault; and,
WHEREAS, Partners Against Violence has been a steadfast advocate for survivors and a beacon of hope in our community, providing essential services and support to those affected by sexual violence.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT, the Mayor and City Council of the City of San Bernardino, do hereby designate April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and recognize Partners Against Violence for their outstanding dedication, compassion, and tireless advocacy on behalf of survivors. Throughout this month and beyond, let us unite as a community to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and support survivors.
