PROCLAMATION OF THE
MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
PROCLAIMING MARCH 26, 2026, AS
SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY COLLEGE DAY
IN HONOR OF THEIR 100TH ANNIVERSARY
IN THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO
WHEREAS, San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) was founded in 1926 as the first purpose- built community college campus in the State of California and one of the first purpose-built community college campuses in the nation, establishing a model for accessible higher education designed specifically to serve the needs of its community; and WHEREAS, for 100 years SBVC has served the City of San Bernardino and the Inland Empire as a comprehensive community college committed to access, opportunity, and student success; and
WHEREAS, throughout its history, SBVC has been a pioneer in expanding educational opportunity, including launching the Inland Empire’s first public nursing program, becoming the first college in California to carry the name “Valley College,” establishing California’s first Dreamers Resource Center at a community college, and being among the first institutions in the nation recognized as a Black-Serving Institution; and
WHEREAS, SBVC has educated generations of Inland Empire residents—including civic leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, public safety personnel, entrepreneurs, and community advocates—who have helped shape the City of San Bernardino and the region; and WHEREAS, SBVC continues to advance workforce development, university transfer pathways, and career technical education programs that prepare students for careers that strengthen the regional economy; and
WHEREAS, SBVC’s commitment to diversity, equity, and community engagement reflects the strength and resilience of the Inland Empire and ensures that students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to succeed; and
WHEREAS, the celebration of SBVC’s Centennial honors a century of educational excellence while reaffirming the College’s mission to uplift students, strengthen families, advance community and contribute to the economic vitality of the region for the next 100 years; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT, the Mayor & City Council of the City of San Bernardino, do hereby recognizes and celebrates the 100th Anniversary of San Bernardino Valley College, commends the College for its enduring legacy of service, leadership, and impact in our community, and proclaims March 26, 2026 as “Valley College Day” in the City of San Bernardino.
