Background
The City of San Bernardino continues to implement pedestrian safety improvements at locations where pedestrian activity and traffic volumes warrant additional crossing treatments. One of the proven safety measures used to improve pedestrian visibility and driver awareness is the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at uncontrolled crosswalks. RRFB systems consist of high-visibility flashing LED beacons mounted on pedestrian crossing signs that are activated when pedestrians intend to cross the roadway. These systems have been shown to significantly improve driver yielding behavior and enhance pedestrian safety. To implement these improvements, the City issued RFQ No. F-25-4060 for the installation of RRFB systems at multiple locations throughout the City.
