Re: Presentation of an Update on the Tanforan Preliminary Project Application Submittal Dear Mayor Rico Medina and City Council Members:
On behalf of Housing Choices, I wanted to affirm our support of the inclusion of housing in the redevelopment of this site, especially affordable housing. We also would like to ask that the city use this opportunity to Affirmatively Further Fair Housing and address an unmet priority of the City’s Housing Element by creating deeply affordable housing inclusive of one of the most vulnerable populations in your community, people with developmental disabilities.
Housing Choices’ mission is to enhance the lives of people with developmental and other disabilities and their families by creating and supporting quality, affordable housing opportunities. We work to ensure that all people enjoy rewarding lives in affordable homes of their choosing, by working with cities and affordable housing developers to create inclusive communities where some units in a typical housing project are set-aside for people with developmental disabilities who receive on-site supportive services funded by the Golden Gate Regional Center. These services which are entitled under the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act and Supreme Court’s Olmstead Decision increase housing access & retention and promote community integration for a population that has historically faced few alternatives to large segregated facilities.
By including some units in the Tanforan project to be set-aside for people with developmental disabilities the city has the opportunity to address a critical missing housing need. The city is currently home to 214 adults with developmental disabilities, less than 15 of whom have been able to transition into their own apartment with supportive services due to the lack of deeply affordable housing available in the city.
Thank you for your leadership to make San Bruno a community in which people of diverse incomes and abilities can continue to thrive.
Sincerely,
Kalisha Webster
Senior Housing Advocate
