Dear Mr. Mayor and Council Members:
I read with interest the City Manager's Newsletter for December, especially the article regarding the concept of making Centennial Park over for community use. That is exactly the idea that I presented to the then City Council almost twenty years ago. Unfortunately, it did not receive three votes.
One of the places that inspired my proposal is the Frank D. Harrington Park in San Carlos on Laurel Avenue. The plot configuration is similar to our Centennial Park, the main entrance on the commercial side with public parking behind which gives the public both front and rear access. The park includes a public stage toward the back that has wheelchair access. The Google Map attachment shows both a shot of the park as well as the plot map.
While I am obviously in favor of converting our Centennial Park into a more useful community area, I am flabbergasted that you are considering using Foundation and City money do to so before you install the long promised children's park on Florida Ave. I don't understand how you can justify not finishing what was started almost eight years ago.
That neighborhood has waited a long time to see their public input made real. City government has often asked people what they want, holding out the promise that they would be listened to. It is time to make good on at least one of those promises.
