RE: Letter of Support for Approval of SummerHill Homes’ 300 Piedmont Avenue Project Application
Dear Hon. Mayor Medina and Members of the City Council,
For seven decades, the San Mateo County Economic Development Association (SAMCEDA) has been a leading voice for the economic engine that is San Mateo County. SAMCEDA believes in the power of a strong economy driven by an appreciation of what that engine provides to our ecosystem on the Peninsula.
By working with employers of all sizes and industries, engaging with our public sector and our elected leadership, recognizing that we have 21 individual jurisdictions (20 cities and one county) and collaborating and communicating with the Chambers of Commerce, non-profit organizations and our educational institutions, SAMCEDA tackles the most difficult challenges through goal-oriented solutions.
On behalf of the SAMCEDA Board of Directors, we support SummerHill Home’s project application at 300 Piedmont Avenue on the former Crestmoor High School site. SAMCEDA strongly supports this project because increasing the supply of new housing, at all income levels, in all types and densities, and in all appropriate areas is one of the most difficult challenges SAMCEDA is tackling across San Mateo County.
The City of San Bruno has shown great vision and leadership in making smart land use decisions. From the approval of the Bayhill Specific Plan, to setting a city expectation of 1,000 housing units at Tanforan, to the approvals of more affordable housing along El Camino Real and San Bruno Avenue, and drafting a thoughtful Housing Element – city staff, the Planning Commission, and the City Council are positioning San Bruno for new housing and economic development.
In addition, this project will add important single-family homes to San Bruno’s housing stock.
Single family homes are still an important component of our housing matrix in San Mateo County. What’s even more important is that 24 of these four-bedroom residences will be called home by local families qualifying at the Low- and Moderate-Income levels. There are not many active development applications in San Mateo County proposing to create below market rate single family homes.
SAMCEDA has long supported projects proposed and developed by SummerHill Homes in San Bruno and across San Mateo County. They do excellent work, respect the existing neighbors, and they will build what they propose. These new homes will add to the character and vitality of the neighborhood and San Bruno.
Beyond the much-needed housing – this project will dedicate land for a new city park with play fields and parking, maintain half of the overall site as permanent open space, generate one time impact fees, and create a new source of city property tax revenue. And finally, the proceeds of the sale of the land by the San Mateo Union High School District will be used in part by the District to create workforce housing for its employees.
I encourage the City Council to approve this project and thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Rosanne Foust
President & CEO, SAMCEDA
