CITY OF SAN BRUNO
DATE: March 25, 2025
TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM: Alex D. McIntyre, City Manager
PREPARED BY: Travis M. Karlen, Community Services Director SUBJECT: Receive Update on the San Bruno Parks Assessment Project and Provide Feedback
BACKGROUND:
In the summer of 2024, the City of San Bruno's Community Services Department partnered with MIG consultants to conduct a comprehensive Parks Assessment. The primary objectives of the assessment were to perform an inventory of the City’s existing park system to determine current condition and functionality, understand park needs through demographic analysis, gather community input, assess the effectiveness of existing parks, develop a strategy to address deferred maintenance, and assess site capacity for system improvements.
The recommendations developed will be refined, through community engagement, into an action plan that identifies short-term capital projects for San Bruno parks.
The park initial assessment process was broken into tasks including:
Project Kick off and session with staff
Tour of parks system
Public Outreach and Engagement Activities
Parks Assessment and Analysis
The engagement activities included use of materials at pop up events in conjunction with City events. The City also performed an online prioritization activity to allow engagement by members of the public.
On November 20, 2024, MIG presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission where they provided an overview and conditions assessment of the parks system. This was publicized to ensure maximum participation by the public. The Commission had an opportunity to provide feedback to staff and ask questions.
Commissioners were very interested in ensuring a look at future development and wanted to see more focused surveying of the residents. As a result, staff enhanced the scope of services to include additional surveying of the community. The surveys were distributed through various means including social media and signage at each park with a QR code. The community survey had a good response with approximately 1,113 total respondents. 2 of 3
