Dear Mayor Medina and members of the San Bruno City Council, I am sending this public comment through email due to my inability to attend the City Council meeting in person today.
My name is Makeleta Vaka, a youth resident in San Bruno who is passionate about outreach and youth representation. I have lived in San Bruno for 15 years, and I am an incoming junior at Mills High School. I have recently been contacting and working with members of the California Association of Youth Commissions (CAYC) with the goal of establishing a youth commission in San Bruno.
Youth commissions provide a wonderful opportunity for youth to get civically engaged and make their voices heard. Many other towns within San Mateo County including Millbrae, Hillsborough, and Burlingame have youth commissions or similar assemblies that allow for youth to advise their city officials, advocate for issues impacting their age group, and actively participate in bettering their communities.
I hope that you would be willing to help me in creating this in our own wonderful community of San Bruno. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I can give more information on the process of initiating a commission as well as support from the CAYC.
