Memorandum
Public Safety Committee
September 20, 2022
To: City Council
From: Rick Loeffler, Chair of the Public Safety Committee Subject: Notice of Urgent Matter – San Gorgonio Park Parking and Traffic Copies: Sean Joyce, Interim City Manager
Kiel Koger, Public Works Director
Adam Atamian, Deputy Community Development Director
From time to time, the Public Safety Committee (PSC) is made aware of potential matters of importance related to public safety outside the PSC’s Council-approved Work Plan. To address these unanticipated issues in a timely fashion, the PSC’s Work Plan includes a project entitled, “Review of Urgent Matters,” which allows the committee to evaluate and investigate a situation and determine whether a memorandum to City Council is necessary to ensure the effective and efficient provision of public safety services and the maintenance of the public's safety.
At the PSC’s August 23, 2022 meeting, the Committee received a comment from a member of the public concerning traffic and parking issues at, and adjacent to, San Gorgonio Park. These concerns relate to a reported blind curve causing vehicles to fail to stop at the stop sign, scheduling of park activities and special events causing overflow parking into surrounding areas, reported unsafe pedestrian crossings, and red curbs causing vehicles to block fire hydrants.
The PSC requests Council direction on whether to investigate this matter further.
Should Council direct the PSC to investigate this matter, the Public Safety Committee will report its findings, with any recommendations, to the Council for further action.
