~------------------------....,
Please explain why you would like to serve on t he Beach es, Parks and Recreation Commi ssion .
I have three children and have used--extensively--all the beaches , parks and swim facilities in the city. My daughter swims six days a week at the Sports Park, we've played soccer at Pirate Park and Hermosa Sports Park, baseball at San Gorgornio, both at Liberty Park, baseball at Steed, have used the Ole Hanson pool, as well as all the beaches including Calafia for Junior Guards. I also spoke with past City Manager Eric Sund about a bicycle pump track, and the local trails that have been made by bike enthusiasts.
I'm also interested in the commission as I have been working with the people on "Save Our Beaches" regarding a comprehensive approach to sand replenishment at our beaches, and how to have this monumental task established and funded for long-term success.
5. Please explain how your background and experience wo uld co ntribute to th e Beaches, Parks and Recreation Commi ss ion.
I think answer #4 explains quite a bit my experiences and why I want to contribute. The very first time speaking at a council meeting--and I hate public speaking--1 talked about meeting two older locals who !Were eating lunch next to me. At the time I only worked in San Clemente. One was a lawyer and the other owned a local shop, and both were in sandals and Hawaiian shirts . Both were also old friends who had gone to San Clemente Hight school together (I asked). This is the type of community that I want to grow up in, and ra ise my kids in. And I want to help make it even better. It's when I decided to make it my goal to raise my family here.
6. Please explain any expertise that you may have in the area of ocea n wat er qualit y and/or beach environmenta l stewardship.
I have no formal training. However, I think I'm one of the few (only?) people who have contacted people like ~he Santa Margarita Water District to find out how water from the Trampas reservoir was diverted from San Uuan Creek during the building and filling of the reservoir. I've also sent letters to the California Coastal Commission regarding our current sand replenishment issues. I've contacted them in the past when supporting the effort to prevent a toll road through San Clemente.
I'll continue to try and make San Clemente a better place to live, whether I get a commission seat or not.
However, I hope that my participation can help support the city more directly with acceptance to this commission.

Please explain any experience that you have in community, governmental, charitable or educational affairs.
I've been a board of trustees member at the Elks Lodge, and have been a board member of the Coalition to Save San Clemente, which focused on the issue of the toll road. We used state legislators, social media, and even litigation to help our city avoid the toll road .
I also helped administer the "San Clemente Cares" facebook site, which at the time had over 5,000 members .
On a more personal level I've helped lead out local "Adventure Guides" troop for our boys, and was an assistant A YSO coach, and took the training to be able to coach up to the high school level. I played competitive soccer at the high school level and college level.
9. The Beaches, Parks and Recreation Commission meets on the second Tuesday in February, April, June, August, October and December at 6:00 pm. Please explain any challenges, if any, you may have in meeting this commitment.
I do't anticipate any challenges, and should have extra time between meetings for communication, education and follow-up .
10. Please describe your views on the qual ity of City beaches and parks, includ ing any steps you feel should be taken for improvement.
There are two main issues facing our beaches ; the homeless and addicted population congregating , littering and leaving drug paraphrenalia at the beach, and sand erosion. Both require long-term, consistent action in order to mitigate their effects. Although the main issue of homelessness needs to be addressed by other portoins of the government, this commission needs to take this into consideration for any of the decisions made for the beaches and park areas.
Sand replenishment will take a long-term, multi-layered approach to do it correctly. It's Federal, State, County and local governments as well as water treatment facilities (current and future), and all stake-holders in this program. Save Our Beach has identified over a dozen groups who have direct intersts in how this issue is managed. If anything, the commission can help keep the lines of communication open and to wrangle as many groups to our cause as possible for the long-term future of our beaches.
11. Please use the space below to explain any other factors about yourself that you would like for the Councilmembers to consider as they review your application .
I hope to be a good representative of the residents on this board, and to make a positive difference. My soals aren't exotic, although I am hoping to "leave it better than you found it." [fhanks for your consideration.

We are so lucky to have beautiful beaches, parks and open spaces in San Clemente! I am a big cheerleader •or community involvement and education. Park clean up and beautification is always a bonus. In regards o our park improvement I feel we can utilize our service groups, and youth organizations within the city to coordinate clean up/beautification events. I would like to take the steps to schedule these on a more regular Pasis. The commission reaching out to them, instead of waiting for them to contact. Another "dream" for our parks/open space would be to finalize and create a community garden utilizing grants/donations from pusinesses to make this a reality! I know this was in the works at one point.

I ' have no issues with this comittment
10. Please describe your views on the quality of City beaches and parks, including any steps you feel should be taken for improvement.
I have always been impressed with the City's abundance of beaches and parks. The beautiful beaches and hillside views are the main reason I moved to San Clemente. I am an avid user of the beach trails and MUNI golf course, both of which are well maintained and easily accessible to the public. Public safety is very important to me and I want to ensure that our public beaches and parks are safe havens for those who use them and do not turn into temporary shelter for the homeless.
Like many other residents, I have concerns about soil erosion along our beaches and cliffs. I do not approve of further development along the cliffs, especially after seeing the most recent landslides. I also have concerns about the stability of the rail road tracks along the shoreline and worry about the future risk of further destabilization of the soil in these areas. I'm sure that the City and State have employed many experts to study and make recommended repairs. I do not profess to have any solutions here.
11. Please use the space below to explain any other factors about yourself that you would like for the Councilmembers to consider as they review your application.
I first moved to San Clemente and purchased a home in 2000-2002. I relocated for my job at the time, but am happy to have moved back a year ago. This is my second year applying for the BPRC. I look forward to being able to give my time to such a worthwhile cause if appointed.
I am familiar with the BPRC's Five Park Masterplan and have reviewed the proposed conceptual park plans. I have been to all five of these parks, and am confident that I wou ld be able to contribute in a meaningful way if given the opportunity to serve.
Thank you for your consideration.

On July 2021 , I was appointed to Beaches, Parks and Recreation in the City of San Clemente. I was appointed to the Coastal Commission advisory sub-committee and appointed to work on he Youth Sports Partnership committee. In addition, I was also part of Supervisor Lisa Bartlett's Coastal Resilience Strategic Planning committee. Please explain any expertise that you may have in the area of ocea n water qual ity and/or bea ch environmental stewa rdship.
Serving on the Coastal Commission sub-committee has been enlightening. There is not one possible solution o solve beach erosion. Sea level rise is continuing . Seawalls may add to sand erosion. That the issue with pea level rise might not be the problem as much as the lack of sediment delivery. We need to explore how to 'hold" the sand on the beaches. Collaborating with other cities might be helpful. I continue to learn more and offer suggestions that might be presented to City Council.

I believe the city is doing its best to provide safe and clean beaches. Beaches look clean . Bathrooms are maintained however there is sometimes vandalism . Not sure if installing security cameras would be helpful. I would like to see more standard water sample reports that are released to the public. We have been trying o get refillable water stations installed and it is taking too long. The parks are being maintained . 5 parks are I.mder the process of being upgraded with playground equipment. I would like to see more lights installed to ncrease the safety and perhaps use some fields at night. Parking on public streets has been an issue at ~ome parks, but I do not think the city can do much to alleviate that problem. We are a dog friendly city and pnly have one dog park. Perhaps another dog park would be feasible. E-bikes will always be a concern. We have rules but not the man power to enforce them. Maybe a volunteer program could be organized to help with this issue.

In 2021, a few neighbors and myself armed an advocacy group, Save Our Beaches San Clemente. This group seeks to restore and protect the t>eautiful public beaches of San Clemente through practical, cost-effective, and nature-based solutions. We nave worked hard to understand all of the issues surrounding our coast, and have reached out to many 9ntities involved with coastal protection.
/\!though my main area of interest is the coastal environment, I also love all of the wonderful parks in our t>eautiful town, and I admire the efforts of our City to continuously maintain and upgrade our facilities.
Outdoor recreation is critically important to the physical and mental health of our residents and the vitality of our community.

I' can do that!
10. Please describe your views on the quality of City beaches and parks, including any steps you feel should be taken for improvement.
San Clemente has beautiful beaches and parks, in particular the parks are well-maintained, and well planned. I use the Dog Park extensively! I think the expanded pickle ball courts sound wonderful, and also he mini-golf facility -- but these projects will need careful planning, and I'd love to be a part of that effort.
Our beaches are one of our core values, and those beaches have been gradually eroding away and we need to focus on bringing back sand -- and keeping that sand on our beaches. The upcoming Federal project will greatly enhance the City-owned beach around the pier, however North Beach and State Beach are in critical condition . We need to renew our efforts to truck sand into North Beach. At State Beach, the oeach has eroded to a critical point where the railroad tracks are being undermined, causing OCTA to dump ocks in front of the tracks, which creates a vicious cycle of turbulence and erosion. We have to work with OCTA to restore a wide sandy beach in front of those tracks, or we risk the potential that this erosion will continue to work its way northward and erode even more beach.

My daughter has volenteered at FAM, The First Tee, and many other clubs at SCHS. My daughter will be attending UCLA in the fall. My son is 15 and attends SCHS. He spent his first semsiter of high school at Crean Luthern. After transferring to SCHS, he has been on the swim team and plays water polo for the SC club team. Between the many activities that my kids are a part of and my wife and I working full time, I enjoy playing golf with friends at the "Muni".

9. Please describe your views on opportunities, if any, to improve the San Clemente Municipal Golf Course.
Extend the driving range fence. Continue to replant fallen or dead trees. Place divot fill bottles in areas that receive a lot of play. Post personal liabilty signs in golf carts, at the entrence of the course, at the register where we pay for our rounds of golf, and at location where private parties can or have been effected by arrant golf shots. Place protective barriers where needed to protect residence in the area and in locations to protect other golfers. Require on-course "Marshals" for Men's club tournaments (especially Saturday tournaments) to ensure pace of play (this effects play outside the tournament). Spread left over mulch in tree wells to retain moisture and make the course more asthetically pleasing. Bring back the First Tee to SCGC. We need to push the youth programs and Rocky's clinics are not for everyone.
10. Please use the space below to explain any other factors about yourself that you would like for the Councilmembers to consider as they review your application.
I believe there should be a long term plan. Areas of focus over the next 20 years. Less reactionary projects which end up more expensive.
I love the course. I love this city. I want my kids and their kids to be able to enjoy this beautiful city for years to come.

4. Please explain why you would like to serve on the Golf Course Committee.
I love "the muni" and appreciate the unique role it plays in preserving the small c9astal town culture that defines San Clemente. On any given day at the Muni you are as likely to play golf with a 15 year old trying to make the high school golf team as you are with a 75 year old retiree. Likewise, you often find 20 year old Hondas and brand new Mercedes parked next to each other in the Muni parking lot. The Muni is a place that transcends demographics, connects people of all backgrounds and experiences, and builds community. I would like to play a role in ensuring this very special resource continues to be a place where residents and visitors can find connection and enjoy the natural outdoor beauty that we are so lucky to enjoy in San Clemente.
5. Please explain how your background and experience would contribute to the Golf Course Committee.
On a personal level, I have lived in San Clemente almost all of my life and have been playing golf at the muni for as long as I can remember. I love this town, our golf course, and the positive impact the Muni has had on life in San Clemente for decades. I am passionate about preserving the Muni for for future generations and ensuring that it remains a fun, challenging, accessible golf course for people of all ages. On a professional level, I am a CPA and 25 year fi nance professional. Throughout my career I have served as a responsible and productive member of many committees, working in both large multinational corporations and small businesses. I enjoy working with people and have a calm, positive demeanor.

As a father of three (two highschoolers at SCHS and a middle schooler at Vista Del Mar), I have been involved in a number of youth-oriented community groups over the years. For many years I have coached soccer in AYSO and baseball in San Clemente Little League. I have served in volunteer roles at both San Clemente Presbyterian Church and Pacific Coast Church. I also served on the Audit Committee for the Allergan Foundation.
8. The Golf Course Committee meets the first Thursday in January, April, July and October at 6:00 p.m. Please explain any challenges, if any, you may have in meeting this commitment.
I do not expect any challenges meeting this commitment.
9. Please describe your views on opportunities, if any, to improve the San Clemente Municipal Golf Course.
The muni is remarkable in terms of how it has stood the test of time. Equipment technology has rendered many golf courses obsolete, yet the Muni remains a great challenge for experienced golfers while also being quite accessible for people just picking up the game. All this with very little change to the course over the last 70 years. It is a wonderful design by a famous and talented architect. I believe the Muni's primary challenge over the next 10 years will be to manage the trees, many of which are very old and have been falling in high numbers in recent years . The trees route the course and challenge the golfer to hit appropriate risk/reward shots. As trees fall, we should manage their replacement to ensure the beauty and integrity of the course. The trees are a big part of what makes the Muni such a special place.

I am truly excited to apply for this position. My motivation is to help preserve this beautiful golf course that has brought me immeasurable joy over my lifetime. With my children growing up and out of the activities that require substantial parental volunteer involvement, I now have more time to dedicate to other aspects of community service and I believe this commission is a great fit for my skills and passion.
I would be honored to serve on this committee and will be fully committed to whatever is asked of me as a committee member. Thank you for the opportunity to apply.

4. Please explain why you would like to serve on the Planning Commission.
5. My wife Angela and I have enjoyed the privilege of living in the community of San Clemente while raising our family and growing my business for many years now. At 62 years of age, I have reached a sort of sweet spot in my career having had an opportunity to make a positive impact on the built environment of many cities. My career has also afforded me the opportunity to mentor a myriad of young professionals who are now thriving in the industry. At this stage of my life, I would like to give back to the community that has given (and continues to) give us so much joy.
Please explain how your background and experience would contribute to the Planning Commission.
To me, the business of architecture has never been about designing and getting buildings built. It has been about shaping our communities in a way that creates joy and opportunities for it's inhabitants and visitors. While running a business, we have purposely maintained a small enough firm to allow me to be personally involved in projects.
As a result, I have presented hundreds of projects to Planning Commissions and City Councils through the years.
This background has informed me that functional and beautiful architecture should be the ingredients of good commmunities and that development is truly a team effort. This team is made up of design and construction professionals serving their clients while working together with the local community jurisdictions to arrive at the best possible solution. This experience gives me insight into the process that will prove to be beneficial to both the city and the developers of projects.

7. In your opinion, what are the three top qualities of San Clemente that should remain unchanged for future generations?
1. __________________________ There exists a wonderful charm and sense of community in San Clemente _ ________________ _ that permeates all of the different areas of the city.
There is a strong connection between the beach and the community which is missing in many beach towns. 2. _______________________________________ _ San Clemente has a wonderful downtown on Del Mar. 3. _________________________________________ _
8. In your opinion, what are three characteristics of San Clemente that are most in need of correction? 9,
10. Del Mar is very important to the identity of San Clemente, but is too narrow in scope ,. ___________________________________________ _ and needs o be expanded
The other regions of San Clemente (primarily Talega and North San Clemente) feel dis-jointed from Southwest. 2·-------------,-------,------------------------- There needs to be a stronger link between the various areas.
The beach trail is very popular with residents and brings visitors from outside the community. 3. ___________________________________________ _ However, where possible, it needs to be utilized to safely connect the adjacent neighborhoods with the beach.
Please explain any experience that you have had in community, governmental, charitable or educational affairs.
I mentioned my experience working with cities as an architect. We have completed many institutional projects through the years which involved working closely with large committees and affected neighborhoods directing the effort in a way that ensured a positive outcome. My wife and I have been active members of our church in a leadership role, mentoring young couples. I served as chairperson of the Architectural control committee at Seapointe Estates during the years of 1996 - 2002. Nearly a quarter of the homes were built during that period, and we worked very hard to ensure value in the community through quality development.
Please describe your ideal vision for San Clemente's future (as it pertains to growth and development). 'Growth is inevitable and good for a city, but it must be scrutinized for how it affects the community as a whole. For example, development in Talega will have a ripple affect through Southwest and North San Clemente and must be carefully evaluated for bow it functions to create a reasonable balance so that all areas of the city will benefit. I also believe that San Clemente can help set a standard for other cities in South County. To do that, we must look at planned development around the area to see how proposed development in San Clemente can complement approved projects elsewhere.

The Planning Commission meets on the Wednesday following the City Council 's Regular meeting at 6:00 p.m. Please explain any challenges, if any, you may have in meeting t his commitment.
As a business owner, I have a flexible schedule which will afford me the time to attend and to do the necessary research to be prepared. We do travel from time to time, but typically for less than a week at a time, so I don't see this as a problem.
If you could influence the City of San Clemente in just one way, what would that be? Bringing the residents of San Clemente together in a way that facilitates "good" growth. I understand that our role as planning commissioners is to facilitate good growth - not stop development. The planning staff is paid to scrutinize the details of a given project, and though I think it is important to understand that process, we must look at the big picture while allowing property owners to build out their properties according to zoning regulations.
Do you have any experience with historic preservation or architectural history? If so, please explain:
As a degreed architect, I had a full year of architectural history, and came to be quite interested in it. For this reason, my wife and I have traveled throughout the world with the specific goal of visiting historic sites to view examples of not just buildings, but places for people that are successful in creating an identity for their communities and promoting public use.
As a firm we specialize in adaptive re-use. It is much more satisfying for me to take a poorly designed property and help turn it into a beautiful and functional space that enhances the community than to create something from scratch.
You can view many examples on our website - www.elementsarch.com.
Please use the space below to explain any other factors about yourself that you would like for the Council members to consider as they review your application.
Over the last fifteen years, our finn has become very selective about doing work for speculative developers. When we started the firm in 1990, we were sustained by developer work, but came to realize that many of the larger companies were not concerned with the communities in which they built. This is certainly not true in all cases, and some developers understand that you can realize a profit while creating quality developments that are a benefit to the city.
My goal will be to work with my fellow commissioners to evaluate projects and see that this kind of balance is achieved.

Please describe your ideal vision for San Clemente's future (as it pertains to growth and development).
Like Carmel. Monterey, Morro Bay, Los Osos, Montecito, Avila Beach etc, San Clemente is a treasured example or the small, mulli-generalional coastal town character that is rapidly being t]u·catened by outside forces beyond our City boundaries. Our City Character is defined in the Vision San Clemente document that our General Plan is based on.
Once this character is gone it cannot be replaced. The powers that be are tiying to solve state and county wide problems with broad boiler plate mandates that ignore local unique conditions and in many instances are bad planning practices.
This doesn't mean that all change is bad. If the changes are tailored Lo be compatible with current local land use and the expectations of the Public, change can be good.
San Clemente is built out. There is room for small infill projects as addressed by mixed use zoning overlays and lot mergers. Large projects will most likely require redevelopment of existing properties. There are some locations east of the freeway where height limits and F AR's could be loosened to increase usable floor area and lower cost per sq. ft.
We can never loose site of the fact that the City designates land uses with zones and overlays, but does not build projects.

12. If you could influence the City of San Clemente in just one way, what would that be?
13. If I can demonstrate to tbe residents of the City that volunteering to serve the City, in anyway possible, is not only personally rewarding but has enormous impact on the success of our Town. If you want change participate , if you don't want change participate. Don't just stand by the wayside and watch. It's "Our" Town and it's "Our" Community and its Our responsibility.

14. Please use the space below to explain any other factors about yourself that you would like for the Council members to consider as they review your application.
I understand the responsibibties of the Planning Commission as well as its limitations. It is an appointed position, not an elected position. The rules, legal limits, and criteria for making a decision or recommendation are different than those of the City Council. The determinations may differ but ultimately the City Council, as elected officials, have the linal say.

4. Please explain why you would like to serve on the Planning Commission.
As a San Clemente city council candidate this past election, I've held a profound interest in keeping San Clemente's reputation as one of the best places in the world to live and work. This role would allow me to contribute directly to the decision-making process and make a positive impact on the development and growth of our city. My extensive background in design would enable me to recommend policies related to land use, zoning regulations, urban development, and overall community design.
5. Please explain how your background and experience would contribute to the Planning Commission.
I studied design and digital media, which led to significant involvement in creative endeavors ranging from largescale art installations, incorporating -the latest digital technologies, to general creative direction. I have a solid understanding and detailed vision for San Clemente that aligns with the vital quality of life standards historically established by Ole Hanson. I see both the Downtown and North Beach areas primed for growth and I'd like to put an end to the costly delays & underutilized eyesores, stemming from many of our currently incomplete largescale commercial projects.
I'd li ke to work with consultants, contractors, and developers to ensure that the Miramar Food-hall / venue, local medical faci lities, and new hotels are completed ASAP. There are currently too many commercial vacancies, delayed developments and unfulfilled spaces, which are all causing San Clemente to lose out on local economic value.
I'd like all generations to have creative, cultural and recreational events on any given weekend, while still striking a balance of quiet, scenic, and walkable residential spaces.

7. In your opinion, what are the three top qualities of San Clemente that should remain unchanged for future generations?
1. PreseNation of the Spanish/ Ole Hanson heritage and maintaing this unique Californian architectural style throughout San Clemente. Cherishing the history of our city.
2. Protecting our world-class beaches and fighting on-going environmental effects. Promoting and advising on environmental sustainability. Related to our beaches, maintaining our cultural heritage as a surfing destination.
3. Protecting our world-class beaches and fighting on-going environmental effects. Promoting and advising on environmental sustainability. Related to our beaches, maintaining our cultural heritage as a surfing destination.
8. In your opinion, what are three characteristics of San Clemente that are most in need of correction?
1. Red-tape, delays in building permits. under-staffing. and all the factors contributing to various commercial developments from being completed. Our city will be more financially solvent if we can have more opportunities for commerce
2. San Clemente is a safe city. but a close eye on crime and homelessness, need to be improved in conjunction with law enforcement. Part of this obstacle Is the need for more affordable housing in the South O.C. area. We also need a long-term vision for expanding parking / transportation throughout the city.
3. Funds and staff need to be dedicated to fighting the effects of erosion, water conservation, and sand replenishment.
San Clemente needs to get ahead of the curve in fighting these environmental concerns.
9. Please explain any experience that you have had in community, governmental, charitable or educational affairs.
10. As mentioned, I ran for City Council this past election cycle, which immediately got me up to speed on many of San Clemente's more pressing concerns. From a more professional perspective, I've worked for the official film office of the Greater Los Angeles area, Film LA, for over 6 years, where I dealt directly with film permits, contracted city clients, and community outreach to residents affected by the impacts of production.
Locally to San Clemente, I volunteer with the Cabrillo Playhouse in designing the promotional artwork for their whole slate of theatrical productions.
Currently, I'm in touch with a local commercial real estate developer on some ideas to improve the North Beach area, as well as working on re-imagining the Knuckleheads venue with an associated colleague.
Please describe your ideal vision for San Clemente's future (as it pertains to growth and development).
I've highlighted the topic of redevelopment in some of my other responses, but essentially, I'd like to see San Clemente become more of a cultural destination, where locals don't have to rely on driving to surrounding cities for leisure, creative outlets, and inspiration.
We are sorely .in need of some new commercial establishments to give our youth entertainment, which will help not only stimulate our local commerce, but to also keep people out of trouble.
I'd like to see more live music opportunities, art exhibitions, and a celebration of the Spanish roots that makes San Clemente so scenic.
One example, the Redo Market, which takes place in Dana Point, is the perfect type of hip event that could take place in San Clemente instead. Furthermore, the tenants and format of the planned Miramar Food Hall should be more like the Lab / CAMP in Costa Mesa.
11. The Planning Commission meets on the Wednesday following the City Council 's Regular meeting at 6:00 p.m. Please explain any challenges, if any, you may have in meeting this commitment.
No challenges. I'll accomodate my schedule as needed.
12. If you could influence the City of San Clemente in just one way, what would that be? To complete the incomplete developments. Accordingly, we need to fill the empty commercial vacancies / eyesores throughout the city.
13. Do you have any experience with historic preservation or architectural history? If so, please explain:
Via my education in Design, I'm quite familiar with architectural history, trends, and eras. My father also works in a construction-related industry, so I do have some familiarity.
14. Please use the space below to explain any other factors about yourself that you would like for the Councilmembers to consider as they review your application.
I'm applying for a role in the Human Affairs Commission as well, which would also be a great role for me to stay involved with our incredible city. However, until an arts or amphitheater committee is created, I feel that this Planning Commission is likely the most effective fit for my experience.

4. Please explain why you would like to serve on the Planning Commission.
5. I am a relatively new resident of San Clemente, and I plan to retire and remain here permanently. I often tell people, I am never moving again!
I want to get involved in the community in a meaningful professional volunteer way. I am currently participating in the Leadership San Clemente program, which has been a valuable oppo1tunity to learn about the city. I've learned that the commissions are the ideal way to volunteer in a professional capacity. I've done a deep dive into the agendas, minutes and videos of the commissions to better understand what they do and what is expected of commissioners.
While it would be an honor to serve on any of the commissions, I believe my professional skills and personal interests are particularly well suited to the Plann ing Conunission. This commission plays an incredibly in1p01tant role in safeguarding the character and culture of San Clemente, while maintaining an appropriate balance between preservation and prosperity. I would like to serve on this c01mnission because I believe I could be a thoughtful, prepared and dedicated member, and could make a meaningful contribution to its imp01tant work.
Please explain how your background and experience would contribute to the Pla nning Commission.
First, I bring the perspective of a small business owner. I opened a children's art studio in Dana Point in 2020, which involved a large Tl project. I am now embarking on building out a second, bigger location in Aliso Viejo. These experiences have taught me a great deal about commercial building and signage permits, city processes, codes and the various complexities of commercial development. I would bring an appreciation for the entrepreneuri al perspective, tempered with an appreciation for a San Clemente's need to be thoughtful and thorough in handling proposals and applications from businesses.
Secondly, my husband and I once renovated a home built in the l 930's in the historically rich community of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan. I genuinely enjoy architecture and design, and developed an interest in things like architectural design standards and Cultural Heritage Protection, which are critical to preserve and strengthen the character of a historic community.
Finally, prior to being a small business owner, I was a management consultant, corporate manager and non-profit fundraising manager. I would be able to learn quickly, synthesize technical infonnation, and contribute readily to the ana lysis, collaboration and cooperation that are required from members of the Planning Commission.

l. Natural beaches with thoughtfolly planned community amenities 2_ Historic walkable downtown
3_ Greenspace
8. In your opinion, what are three characteristics of San Clemente that are most in need of correction? l. Revitalization ofN01th Beach - making it a more desirable, vibrant and attractive location (National Historic District designation, Placemaking Plan) 2_ Remediation / accelerated development of prominent eyesore properties (I was ve1y happy to see the focus on the razing of the dilapidated gas station in the center of town) 3_ Coastal Planning and Protection
9. Please explain any experience that you have had in community, governmental, charitable or educational affairs.
Leadership San Clemente Program (current)
Member of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce
School Parent Teacher Organizations (15 years) St Margaret's Executive Board (3 years) School Fundraising (10 years volunteer, 4 years as Advancement Manager, International School of Dusseldorf) Nonprofit Fundraising Manager (Room to Read, Caring for Cambodia)
10. Please describe your ideal vision for San Clemente's future (as it pertains to growth and development).
I would like to answer this by taking the perspective of a resident (such as my children or grandchildren) 25 or 50 years from now.
Ideally, I would want them to say:
"San Clemente did a great job managing growth and development over the years! They stayed with the times but didn't fall into the over-commercialization trap. They are thriving. They retained their history and character while businesses of all kinds thrive on Del Mar, in Los Molinas and in South San Clemente. The parks and green spaces are wonderful.
And North Beach is one of the greatest comeback stories in California - what an oceanfront gem! It's an amazing place to Ii ve and we are so fortunate."
11. The Planning Commission meets on the Wednesday following the City Council's Regular meeting at 6:00 p.m. Please explain any challenges, if any, you may have in meeting this commitment.
None
12. If you could influence the City of San Clemente in just one way, what would that be? I don't envision myself in a prominent or powerful position in San Clemente. I don't have a grand plan or mission. I'm not a political person with an agenda:
I think it's really easy for people to complain and grandstand and bluster. It's easy to criticize. It's even easier from behind your computer. But actually getting things done takes hardworking, dedicated people who care and have stamina.
My goal is to find opportunities where I can do something useful and positive. I want to be a factor in many small wins and successes in my community, consistently year after year. I want to help people with good ideas get positive things done.
(See#l4)
13. Do you have any experience with historic preservation or architectural history? If so, please explain:
!As I answered in #5, I have some experience renovating a home in a historic neighborhood. !While I don't have any professional experience or training, I do have an interest in, and have accumulated a fair bit of mderstanding of ai1 and architecture.
For example, I lived in Gemrnny for 7 years in the historic village ofKaiserswe11h, which wasn't destroyed in WW2. I ived for a tin1e in a row house that was renovated from a 200 year old silk factory . The architect was my neighbor and friend . 1 took a deep interest in learning about buildings that had survived the war and those that had been faithfully ·ecreated dming post-war reconstruction, as in the city of Dresden. I lived in Dusseldorf and enjoyed learning about he competing/co-existing interests between modem architecture and historical preservation/restoration in that city.
14. Please use the space below to explain any other factors about yourself that you would like for the Council members to consider as they review your application.
I was born in Detroit in the summer of the riots. My large extended family all lived in the city. Within 10 years, eve1yone had moved to the suburbs. People called it "white flight ", but my family wasn't fleeing from black people, they had been living happily in a mixed community for 2 generations. Our black neighbors were moving away too.
They were fleeing from crime, drugs, declining schools and abandoned neighborhood houses. The more families who moved out, the worse it got. And it got very ve1y bad in my neighborhood.
I wony about this effect at North Beach. I wony when I hear at council meetings that families won't take their kids to North Beach, that they haven't been there in years. It becomes such a teITible spiral.
There are many perspectives on how to deal with the situation that has developed at Nmih Beach through enforcement and/or social services. But do we give enough aii1ime or attention to the roles of economic growth and development and community activity in keeping areas clean, safe and family friendly? I believe that Chapters 4 and 5 of the Nmih Beach Placemaking Plan are crucial and I will support and contribute to realizing their potential in any way I can.
Detroit is finally experiencing a remarkable downtown transformation. It was brought on by the investment, dedication and stamina of business people for the past 10-15 years, with the leadership and support of city government.
