CITY OF SAN CLEMENTE

HUMAN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
APPLICATION CityofSan Clemente
MAY !2 2023

1. Name:

City Clerk Department Tyler Boden

2. How long have you lived in San Clemente? 2000-2006; '2016- Present ----------- --------------

3. What is your occupation? Solar Energy Consultant

4. Please explain why you would like to serve on the Human Affairs Committee.

I served on the HAC from 2018-21 and decided not to apply again in '21 so I could focus on other volunteer efforts like the San Clemente Rotary Club and the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce, as wel l as other non-profits. Now, two years later, I feel that my expanded involvement in various non-profits around the community would help me to support the initiatives and overall connectedness of the HAC.

5. Please explain how your background and experi ence would contribute to the Human Affairs Committ ee.

I have served on many boards and committees in the past, including this committee, so I would be able to hit the ground running and get to work on the initiatives the committee has set forth. My experience with homelessness is mentioned in the next question, but I also have a lot of involvement with organizations focused on youth mental health and personal development, and I believe serving on this committee would help to increase the impact of these organizations and programs being offered around the community.

6. Please explain any expertise that you may have in the area of homelessness.

During my first term on the HAC, I learned a lot about the issue of homelessness in San Clemente. I participated in the Point in Time count, led the coordination of the Town Hall Meeting on Homelessness that occurred in 2019, and also was a member of the Joint Homeless Subcommittee on Homelessness, which was comprised of member of the Human Affairs and Publ ic Safety committees.

7. What is your educational background?
High School/Colleges Attended Major Field of Study Degree? San Clemente High School G.E. 2006
San Diego State University B.A., English 2010

8. Please explain any experience that you have in community, governmental, charitable or educational affairs.

I've been a member of the San Clemente Rotary Club since 2016, which has included volunteer and fundraising 'vVork for various community and international causes. I was on the wrestl ing team at SCHS as a student, and I participate in the SCHS Rotary Wrestling Tournament every year. I also participate in other volunteer efforts with AVID and Interact students at SCHS. I am currently working with the Chamber of Commerce on workforce development programming to support high school students and other young people

9. The Human Affairs Committee meets on a regular basis on the second Tuesday of every other even month at 3:00 p.m. Please explain any challenges, if any, you may have in meeting this commitment.

None

10. Considering the City's limited financial resources, please describe your views on how the City can address human needs in the community.

Having served on this committee in the past, I have seen the impact that the CDBG and Social Service grants can have on the organizations receiving them, however, I decided to leave the HAC because I saw how much opportunity there was to make an impact outside of the City's scope. My main reasoning for wanting to join this committee again is to try to connect the dots between those two things - to help the City to become a resource hub that helps organizations carry out their missions, rather than just giving money.

11. Please describe your understanding of the principal roles and respo nsibilities of the Human Affairs Committee.

The Human Affairs Committee's principal role is to act as a sounding board for the City Council on matters pertaining to the health and well-being of the residents of San Clemente, 'from cradle to grave.' This role has taken different shapes over the years, but my goal would be to really get the community to look at the HAC as a central hub where resources, services, or answers to questions or concerns can be found easily.

12. Please use the space below to explain any other factors about yourself that you would like for the Councilmembers to consider as they review your application.

My main reasoning for wanting to apply for this committee is a see a lot of synergy between the mission of this committee and many of the projects I am working on already. There is workforce development with the Chamber, youth programs and community service with Rotary, as well as a supportive role for several of our local non-profits working to support young people in their development. I think that I am well positioned to utilize this seat to support the efforts of other non-profits around the community, and increase the impact.
