CITY OF SAN CLEMENTE
COASTAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE APPLICATION
I believe it is important to be civically engaged in your community. I enjoy being engaged, involved, and to give back to my community. I wish to continue my engagement following completing the city's 2023 Leadership program. Furthermore, I believe my professional work background in environmental assessments/investigation, geotechnical slope stability, beach erosion, sand preservation, stormwater management, water quality issues and people management skills would fill a critical need on the Coastal Advisory Commission
I believe my 35+ years of professional work experience in environmental water quality investigations, beach erosion, storm water monitoring & reporting, and people management skills would complement the needs of this commission. I have a problem solving, "can do" attitude.
My background in hydraulics, hydrogeology, engineering, storm water sampling & permitting, and erosion control gives me a solid foundation in understanding the key issues that the commission will need to address.
This understanding will benefit the city when reviewing and evaluating the Nature Based Resiliency Project Feasibility Study as well as monitoring the progress of the USACE's Public Restoration Project.
California State University at Fullerton – Jan 1986 Geological Sciences BS CA Registered Professional Geologist # 6652
CA Registered Certified Hydrogeologist # 637
As an environmental professional, I have dealt with many governmental and regulatory agencies, such as:
1) Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), 2) USEPA, 3) CA Regional Water Quality Board (RWQCB), 4) LA METRO, 5) LA Dept of Beach & Harbors, 6) Professional Environmental Management Association (Acting VP, past treasurer)
As a private citizen...
1) Past President, VP, and treasurer of Fullerton Recreational Riders - Liaison to City of Fullerton & managed establish MOU re: water quality, 2) Volunteer at Family Assistance Ministries (FAM), 3) Volunteer/advocate at Mission San Juan Capistrano providing tours to 4th graders and private VIP tours/events promoting the importance of the Spanish Mission System as start of California's history, and 4) Completed the city of San Clemente’s Leadership Program in 2023.
The eroding beaches is major problem that needs to be controlled if San Clemente is to remain a destination spot for businesses and visitors. I support programs to study beach erosional currents and sand replenishment/preservation.
We need to continue efforts to secure funding for beach restoration, such as the USACE Public Beach Restoration Project starting this fall (hopefully) from Linda Lane to north of T-Street. This will have an immediate impact on the quality of our beaches and elevate interest from the local public, county supervisors, and state/federal elected officials to invest in additional coastal studies, sand preservation approaches, and nature-based conservancy model.
In addition to having participated in San Clemente's 2023 Leadership Program and other civic organizations, I am a practical, levelheaded, civic-minded resident with over 35 years of professional experience in geologic assessments, environmental planning, policy, public surveys/meetings, and science-based studies. Facts, and solid science-based studies must be conducted and presented to policy decision makers for the best outcomes to be realized. I believe I can provide the city reliable professional opinions and recommendations as member of the Coastal Advisory Commission.
