4. Please explain why you would like to serve on the Arts and Culture Committee.
I would like to serve on the Arts and Culture Committee because I have great love and passion for the arts. I believe that my Hispanic heritage will allow me to advocate and represent Latinos in the community. I think it is important to honor traditions that are significant to our ancestry such as the Día de Los Muertos, which the City will celebrating the 3rd Annual Día de Los Muertos at Max Berg Plaza Park. I have attended the Dia de Los Muertos events. This has created a sense of belonging that fostered inclusiveness. We are a Spanish Village By the Sea and we should embrace and support a spirit of togetherness. I was honored that the City Manager asked a fellow San Clemente resident and I if the community would embrace it and we definitely agreed. It is something that has been embraced by the entire community.
I have experience being on the Citizen's Amphitheater Committee to address some issues raised with an Amphitheater, which on their current work plan. I have attended the Arts and Culture Committee meeting and/or have listened to their meetings to be informed.
5. Please explain how your background and experience would contribute to the Arts and Culture Committee.
I reached out recently to a band, Los Mysteriosos, to be engaged in city events to promote inclusiveness I was on the Citizens Amphitheater Committee with Former Mayor Wayne Eggleston, Susie Lantz, Kirsti McCleary Drama Director at San Clemente High School, and Pamela Roth. We worked effortlessly together for having an Amphitheater in our 2 community. I mentioned that Max Berg Plaza Park has an Amphitheater stage and while on the Committee suggested having plays there. I had reached out to Shakespeare By the Sea for their input and they shared great information with me about plays at the park and at Amphitheaters.. After that committee was discontinued, I approached the City Manager to meet with Bella Collina in hopes of forming an agreement at Bella Collina's Amphitheater to have events. That would engage the community in bringing activities there..
Since I used to Hula Dance with a Halau, I reached out to Halau Hula Lani Ola and I spoke with them about a potential partnership and advice was given to me about Amphitheaters based on their experience. She provided great information. I have experience in working collaboratively with the community in accessing community needs and activities. I have spent over 25 years in collecting art work and selling artwork. .
