$44.79--$54.45 Hourly
$7,764.41-$9,437.27 Monthly
Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class.

Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

DEFINITION
Under general direction, performs advanced and specialized technical engineering support work with primary responsibility for Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geospatial mapping, infrastructure data management, and spatial analysis in support of Public Works engineering, capital improvement, asset management, development review, utility coordination, and related departmental functions. Develops, maintains, and applies GIS-based engineering records, maps, technical datasets, and infrastructure information to support Public Works operations, project implementation, and long-term infrastructure planning. This classification emphasizes department engineering application of GIS technologies and does not include enterprise GIS governance, citywide GIS administration, or information technology system ownership responsibilities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the specialist-level classification within the Engineering Technician series with focused responsibilities in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS), geospatial engineering support, infrastructure mapping, and Public Works technical data analysis. Positions in this classification perform highly specialized duties requiring advanced knowledge of GIS applications, engineering records, infrastructure systems, spatial analysis, and technical mapping in support of Public Works & Utilities projects and operations.

This classification is distinguished from Senior Engineering Technician by its primary focus on advanced GIS application, geospatial asset management, infrastructure data integrity, and specialized technical mapping support for Public Works engineering functions.

This classification is distinguished from GIS Coordinator in that the Engineering Technician Specialist (GIS) applies GIS as a specialized departmental engineering and infrastructure tool rather than serving as the City’s enterprise GIS administrator. The incumbent focuses on Public Works operations, engineering support, infrastructure records, CMMS integration, and project delivery and does not perform citywide GIS governance, enterprise database administration, GIS server management, software licensing administration, cybersecurity controls, enterprise application development, or citywide GIS strategic planning.

Essential Functions
Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Develop, maintain, update, and manage Public Works GIS datasets, asset and reference feature Attachment 2E
classes, infrastructure records, engineering maps, and other asset inventories related to streets, storm drains, sewer, traffic systems, utilities, easements, rights-of-way, and other capital assets. • Utilize ESRI ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Software, or other software systems to prepare mapping exhibits, web maps/applications, technical, spatial or other data analyses and visualizations to support engineering design, capital improvement projects, infrastructure planning, maintenance activities, public inquiries or other CMMS related efforts. • Integrate AutoCAD drawings, engineering plans, record drawings, survey information, GPS field data, and other documentation into the City’s GIS and CMMS systems in order to maintain accurate engineering and asset records.
• Conduct technical GIS and data analysis to support project feasibility, infrastructure planning, asset management, utility coordination, construction support, and departmental operational decisionmaking. • Research, verify, correct, and maintain engineering, parcel, utility, easement, and infrastructure records for Public Works and Utilities applications.
• Coordinate the field verification of infrastructure assets, utility locations, easements, and engineering records using GPS, field inspections, and related tools. • Support public records request responses, utility locating coordination, and infrastructure verification through existing City GIS and document repository systems. • Assist Public Works and Utilities staff by providing GIS-related technical support for capital projects, maintenance operations, asset inventory, and departmental initiatives. • Develop and maintain departmental GIS procedures, workflows, technical standards, and documentation specific to Public Works and Utilities operational needs. • Coordinate with engineers, surveyors, contractors, consultants, and internal departments to ensure GIS-supported engineering data remains accurate, accessible, and operationally relevant. • Respond to technical inquiries from City staff, design professionals, contractors, outside agencies, and the public regarding engineering maps, GIS-based infrastructure information, and Public Works records.
• Assist with implementation of GIS-related process improvements for Public Works/Utilities functions while coordinating with GIS Coordinator or Information Technology staff as appropriate for enterprise-level system needs.
• Maintenance and QA/QC of City’s GIS asset inventory and its integration with the City’s CMMS software systems.
• Maintenance and update Public Works/Utilities data schema. • Development, maintenance and improvement of Public Works/Utilities GIS metadata. • Assist in the continuous deployment and implementation of the City’s CMMS systems. • May train or assist departmental staff in the use of GIS and CMMS applications and mapping resources relevant to Public Works operations.
• Preparation of Location Maps and Exhibits in support of Public Works/Utilities projects and development of Capital Improvement Program graphics.
