Mayor, Council, City Attorney, Independent Budget Analyst, City Clerk Comment:
CC-1: Councilmember von Wilpert mentioned the school shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. She stated there were warning signs and one of the parents called the school but because they don’t have the same red flag laws and same gun violence restraining order programs that we have in San Diego action couldn’t be taken before a young 14-year old shot and killed his classmates. Councilmember Wilpert thanked the City Attorney for being a leader in this. She mentioned that school shootings do not have to be a fact of life in this country and we are showing here in San Diego how we can fight back.
City Attorney Comment: City Attorney Elliot informed everyone that her office has been working to update resolutions and ordinances by bringing it into the modern century. She commended her team for working on this diligently to make sure everyone can understand what they are trying to say by making them easier to read.
City Clerk Fuentes announced the opening of a unique and significant exhibit curated by her amazing City Clerk Archives team in proud collaboration with the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center. This groundbreaking exhibit, titled "Telling Our Stories and Preserving Our Histories: The Chicano Movement in San Diego," will honor both American Archives Month and Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month. She stated the exhibit will kick-off on September 16th at 12:00 p.m. in the lobby of the City Administration Building and will run through October 18th. City Clerk Fuentes encourages everyone to join in celebrating this important exhibit as it promises to be an enlightening and reflective experience that honors the resilience, history, and spirit of the Community of Barrio Logan/Logan Heights and the Chicano community in San Diego.
