Mayor, Council, City Attorney, Independent Budget Analyst, City Clerk Comment:
CC-1: Councilmember Whitburn commented on the federal agents who conducted an immigration enforcement action last Friday. He noted many San Diegans are furious at the unnecessary and alarming show of force deployed at a restaurant in District 3. Councilmember Whitburn questioned the justification for dozens of agents wearing masks, carrying machine guns, handcuffing all workers to execute a raid for someone who maybe undocumented. He questioned if these federal agents violated the constitutional rights of the American citizens working at the restaurant and indiscriminately handcuffed. Councilmember Whitburn encouraged everyone to make it clear that those kinds of federal actions are completely unacceptable.
CC-2: Councilmember Elo-Rivera thanked Councilmember Whitburn for standing up against the actions of ICE agents invading South Park last Friday. He added that this was an act of terrorism with the intent to scare and terrify San Diegans into compliance. Councilmember Elo-Rivera stated this was an amplified version of deportations where parents are ripped out of their cars while their children watch or people in courthouses abiding by the law having the rug pulled out from under them amidst legal proceedings. He stated Friday was an important wake-up call for everyone. Councilmember Elo-Rivera affirmed this is the time for everyone in San Diego to take a stand and expressed his sadness for the folks in South Park who experienced this.
CC-3: Councilmember von Wilpert announced the beginning of Pride Month nationally and internationally. She stated there are 588 anti-LGBTQ bills that have been introduced this year in state and local legislatures across the country.
Councilmember von Wilpert mentioned there are folks in our own backyard that are experiencing bigotry and hate due to their LGBTQ identity. Councilmember von Wilpert highlighted the celebration of the Equality Awards with LGBTQ elected officials in Coronado last week. She noted pending threats to federal funding because of the choice to celebrate our identities. Councilmember von Wilpert added we need to stand up as a City and make sure that everyone here knows they are included and loved.
CC-4: Council President LaCava commented on last Friday’s actions that caused trauma, scare, and outrage. He stated they want to us to fear that this could happen to our families at our businesses and while we are at dinner. Council President LaCava acknowledged time and time again actions that try to tear San Diego apart only make us stronger. He noted we will investigate and denounce, but more importantly, we will remember who did this. Council President LaCava demanded a public apology for this horrible action. He added public safety means keeping everyone safe and with respect we expect nothing less.
City Clerk Fuentes announced the second-year partnership with The Office of Child and Youth Success which invited San Diego high schools to join the Dr. Shirley N.
Weber voter registration challenge. She stated this challenge increases youth voter registration and amplifies their voice. Voters can pre-register to vote starting at 16 years old with a new addition aimed at expanding participation by accepting student waivers in the targeted age group who had already pre-registered or were not eligible to pre-register. City Clerk Fuentes mentioned to support the schools in this challenge ready-to-use social media campaigns were created and voter registration card drop offs/pickups were coordinated throughout the challenge. She announced there were nine schools who participated and over 300 students who pre-registered to vote during the two-week challenge. To celebrate their civic engagement, schools were invited to an award ceremony with Channel 93.3’s “Geena the Latina”. City Clerk Fuentes listed the winning schools and thanked everyone involved for their participation, collaboration, and assistance.
