Mayor, Council, City Attorney, Independent Budget Analyst, City Clerk Comment:
CC-1: Councilmember von Wilpert said she attended a vigil with Councilmember Foster honoring victims of gun violence, originally planned to remember the Sandy Hook victims, but also acknowledging recent shootings and antisemitic attacks in the U.S. and Australia. She emphasized the need for the community to unite against hate and gun violence, noting San Diego’s success with tools like red flag laws and gun violence restraining orders. Councilmember von Wilpert announced plans to hold public safety hearings on hate crimes, including antisemitism, and on gun violence prevention.
CC-2: Councilmember Elo-Rivera commented on the recent shootings, particularly the attack in Bondi Beach, noting the heightened fear within the Jewish community during the start of Hanukkah. He emphasized that no one should be targeted because of their identity, beliefs, or faith. Councilmember Elo-Rivera also highlighted that one of the attackers was disarmed by a Muslim immigrant who risked his life, pointing to this act as a powerful example of shared humanity and interdependence. He thanked Councilmember von Wilpert for raising the issue and stressed the importance of rejecting dehumanization in all forms.
CC-3: Councilmember Campbell thanked colleagues and agreed with their concerns, then proposed a policy solution to reduce mass shootings. She cited the federal ban on automatic style weapons in the 1990s, noting that school shootings were far less frequent during that period and increased after the ban expired. Councilmember Campbell stated that reinstating such a ban could be effective again, pointing to New Zealand’s response to a mosque shooting, where automatic weapons were banned and turned in. She emphasized that these weapons are meant for military use, not civilians.
