MAYOR, COUNCIL, CITY ATTORNEY, INDEPENDENT BUDGET ANALYST, CITY CLERK COMMENT COUNCILMEMBER COMMENT-1:

Councilmember Campillo articulated that a congressman’s tweet claiming Muslims do not belong in American society is offensive, unconstitutional, and morally wrong because it rejects the core American principle of religious freedom and pluralism. Councilmember Campillo went on to explain that the U.S. Constitution—especially the First Amendment—protects the rights of all people regardless of faith, and that America’s strength lies in allowing people with different beliefs to live together peacefully under the law. By attacking Muslims and denying pluralism, the tweet undermines both American democratic values and the very freedoms that allow such speech to exist.
