TO: Mayor and Council
FROM: Elizabeth Nunez, City Manager
SUBJECT: Consideration of Resolution 2023-08 authorizing collaboration with St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church
Recommendation:

Approve Resolution No. 2023-08 authorizing City Staff to collaborate with catholic church to solicit donations for the benefit of individuals and families impacted by the winter storms in Merced County
Executive Summary
The County of Merced activated an Emergency Operation Center after the winter storms caused significant damages to roads, structures and homes. Federal and State agencies have mobilized to coordinate temporary shelters and provide support to many individuals and families who were left without a home as a result of the storm and flooding.

In the County of Merced both the communities of Planada and City of Merced have been significantly impacted by the storm leaving many families without a home and a total loss of all their belongings. In a joint effort with the Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church the City wishes to demonstrate support to a neighboring community in dire need after the effects of a natural disaster left many families having to rebuild their lives and homes.

The City of San Joaquin and St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church would like to join forces and make a request to the community to donate hygiene, personal and household items that will be donated to the families impacted by the winter storm in Merced County. The City will collaborate by assisting with:
• Solicitation of donations from the community
• Collection of donated items
The church will also reach out to its parishioners to request donated items. Both the City and church will gather all collected items and transport to a local relief center that will distribute the items to those most affected by the storms and floods.
