RE: Item 3.4 - Charter Review Commission Report and Recommendations.

Dear Mayor Liccardo and City Councilmembers,

I would like to share my support for Councilmembers Magdalena Carrasco and Sylvia Arenas’ memorandum to amend the City Charter to extend municipal voting rights to all residents of the City of San José, regardless of immigration status. The Charter Review Commission has been committed to presenting analysis and recommendations that focus on improving transparency, accountability, and equal representation in voting and elections. San José is home to one of the largest, dynamic immigrant communities in the nation. As indicated in the Councilmembers’ Memorandum, historical barriers to participate in our democracy coupled with the inaction on comprehensive immigration reform has silenced the voice of thousands of San José residents. I am proud that the Assembly District I represent is comprised of hardworking families from around the world who contribute to our city’s growth and well-being. It is time that we ensure that these residents have a say in our Democratic process.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

ASH KALRA
