Dear Rules Commi ee,
We strongly recommend and support inclusion of this memorandum as an agenda item January 2022 or early February 2022. We wholeheartedly agree with the memo’s recommenda on to redirect funds to other VTA projects and cease forward movement on the Charcot Extension.
Councilmember Cohen together with Mayor Liccardo and Councilmembers Peralez and Foley published a memorandum that recommends that the City Council officially directs staff to “take any steps necessary to cease progress” on Charcot.
We at Orchard, along with our community base, have long been working to stop this project due to the unnecessary healthy and safety risk for the children of Orchard School. We are pleased and very happy that our City Council member David Cohen, and Mayor Liccardo have “listened” to the community base in evalua ng their publicized recommenda on. There was no good loca on for an extension ending at Orchard school unfortunately, and we think that was a deciding factor in “pu ng our children first”.
Thank you to Mayor Liccardo, and the San Jose City council for their support. Mr. Cohen has also been instrumental in reaching out and mee ng with us regularly to fully understand all of the nega ve impacts this extension would bring. We sincerely appreciate his hands on approach, efforts and caring.
May we all have a safe and healthy 2022. This is a wonderful step in the right direc on.
Best regards,
Stephanie Hill

Dear Mayor Liccardo and City Councilmembers,
I am wri ng to you all to request to stop the Charcot extension project.
As a parent of 2 students in Orchard, I am deeply concerned about my children's health and safety during the construc on and opera on of the Charcot extension. The proposed me savings for the daily commuter was argued to be negligible. This is an outdated and dangerous project and I respec ully request for its termina on.
Thank you for your considera on.

Dear Mayor Liccardo and City Councilmembers,
I am living in Silkwood Ln, San Jose beside Orchard School. I am writing to deliver my voice, say "No" to Project 5.2 Charcot Extension.
The Charcot Extension is and was an unnecessary and harmful project Because it will definitely affect our safety and peaceful living enviormence/
I thank Mayor Liccardo, Counclmember Cohen, Councilmember Peralez and Councilmember Foley for their memo and their support of the community.
I stand with my many fellow community members who have opposed this project for years.
I ask you to cancel the project and take it out of any future plans or policies the City, VTA or anybody else has.
Thank you for your support

Dear Councilmember Davis,
As a brand new resident of District 6 and member of the leadership team of Mothers Out Front Silicon Valley, I am keenly interested in your vote on the Charcot Ave. Extension Project. As a climate activist of 7 years, I’ve often mentioned in city council meetings, there is a 30-year lag between the time that greenhouse gases are emitted and when the effects are felt. The catastrophic wildfires, drought, and floods we are experiencing today are largely due to emissions from 30 years ago.
It is heartening to see that this Council is not only setting ambitious climate goals but is actually taking the necessary decisions to implement them - even if they seem difficult at first. Thank you for working with the community, with staff, with VTA and other stakeholders to lay the groundwork for today’s decision. Please vote to end the Charcot project.
Indeed, it makes no environmental or fiscal sense to be investing in expanding highways which will only increase our VMT for decades. Especially since we may reach our climate’s irreversible tipping point in 5 years, not 10, 15 or 25. In 2019, the city council declared a climate emergency. Please keep your word to our young people whose future is at stake to act URGENTLY on climate. I urge you to approve this memo and ultimately remove the Charcot project from the general plan, and continue to re-evaluate other projects like it and pursue more climate friendly solutions with the urgency of the climate emergency.
Thank you.

Subject: Support Item 5.1 to drop the Charcot Ave. Extension Project Dear Mayor Liccardo, Vice Mayor Jones, and Councilmembers Jimenez, Peralez, Cohen, Carrasco, Davis, Esparza, Arenas, Foley and Mahan,
As leaders in the community representing 2000+ South Bay supporters, we strongly support the Memo by Mayor Liccardo and Councilmembers Cohen, Peralez and Foley directing staff to “take any steps necessary to cease progress” on the Charcot Ave. Extension Project.
We have steadfastly opposed this misguided project for health, safety, equity, climate and fiscal reasons as detailed in our letter of June 7, 2020, signed by 162 community members. Our concerns about increased air pollution were echoed by BAAQMD (the Bay Area Air Quality Management District) in their letter to staff on November 1, 2019.
Now that the VTA has given its approval to redirecting funding from this environmentally racist project, it’s time to discontinue it for good. We urge you to support the Orchard School Community in protecting the health, safety and property of the students, staff and neighbors, and to support our fragile climate by avoiding increased Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) and greenhouse gas emissions.
We urge you to do the right thing for the community and children and vote to approve the Memo to drop this outdated project once and for all, removing it from any future plans or policies of the City of San Jose.
Thank you,

Subject: City Council 2/1, Item 5.2 Charcot Extension
Dear Mayor Liccardo and City Councilmembers,
As a parent, I am concerned about The Orchard School. The Charcot Road Extension is an unnecessary and harmful project because it extends a busy road way too close to classrooms, adding traffic noise and pollution right near the classrooms. Adding a busy road next to an elementary school is not necessary for commute flow, and it is a huge safety hazard for children and families who walk to school. This roadway would also remove a portion of the outdoor play area, an unfair encroachment.
Environmental equity is at stake here. Historical plans to add more roads and cars are irrelevant at this point - what matters is what the impacts are today. Any small gains through adding this road simply do not outweigh the environmental and safety consequences to this school community.
