Dear Rules and Open Government Committee,
I am writing to you in support of Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the closure of these streets have proven to not only be a lifeline to our local businesses but also enhanced the vibrancy of Downtown San Jose. Closing the street to vehicular traffic has allowed for more pedestrian activity and refocusing our public right of ways on people first.

I ask that you approve Councilmember Peralez’s request to agendize his proposal for City Council discussion. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Henry Cord, Member, Downtown Parking Board

The parking garage on Market still has access, and it’s time for our City to truly commit to making a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly environment, especially in light of all the vehicle crime this year.

Post Street is incredibly sad to see at any time of the day and week now. There are parked cars and little foot traffic. A once-vibrant street in an already challenged downtown is now just another place for cars to enjoy. This proposal prioritizes people over cars, something our City leaders have always been reluctant to do.

Dear Rules and Open Government Committee,
I am writing to you in support of Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the closure of these streets has proven to really enhance the vibrancy of Downtown San Jose. Closing the street to vehicular traffic has allowed for more pedestrian activity and refocusing our public right of way on people first.

I would really love to see these streets permanently closed to vehicular traffic and allow them to be further beautified with the collaboration and work of CBOs and other community members.

I ask that you approve Councilmember Peralez’s request. Thank you! Sincerely,

Learn why this is important

Dear Rules and Open Government Committee,
I am a resident of San Jose, and I write to support Councilmember Peralez’s proposal for the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street.

Expanding pedestrian access to shops and restaurants will draw more people downtown. Just take a look at the crowds at Santana Row. My family and I are once again spending time downtown thanks to the enhanced vibrancy. It's so pleasant to have some space away from the racing engines and blaring speakers, a space where pedestrians can feel like they belong.

Cars rule every inch of this city. Please give pedestrians just this one block! Sincerely,
Gregory Murphy

We need to be looking for MORE spaces to prohibit deadly vehicle traffic to open to community uses such as outdoor recreation and dining.  This is one of the small ways downtown SJ can take concrete action to distinguish itself from lookalike neighbors and become a true destination.

I ask that you approve Councilmember Peralez’s request to agendize his proposal for City Council discussion. Thank you!

Dear Rules and Open Government Committee,
I am writing to you in support of Council member Peralez’s proposal on the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street.

Closing the street to vehicular traffic has allowed for more pedestrian activity and made people come first.

I have been car-free for 26 years.  The car does not promote good social interaction nor promote health.

Making pedestrian and bicycle travel safer is the future of healthy cities.

I ask that you approve Councilmember Peralez’s request to agendize his proposal for City Council discussion. Thank you!

Members of the Rules Committee:

SPUR believes the Al Fresco program should be codified in a way that is easy for business and property owners to understand and that streamlines the permitting process. Business and property owners should have the option to use an Al Fresco program that is flexible and cost- effective. Given the popularity of the Al Fresco program citywide, it makes sense to move toward more permanent solutions. However, sending this item through the priority setting process has the potential to do the opposite. It might just kill the program.

We all recognize that Al Fresco continues to have value throughout the city; and although there is still some uncertainty as to what life will be like over the long term, San José has the opportunity to do things differently as we emerge from the pandemic. It is important that we not return to old norms, but instead support many of our small business owners by codifying an Al Fresco program that continues to facilitate outdoor community connections.

Please support Councilmember Peralez's memorandum. Now is the time to move forward.

Hi!

I wanted to reach out about the possible street closure, hopefully y'all are the people to talk to!

I am the owner of Pageboy, it's a salon/retail space located at 30 Post St. We really enjoyed the temporary street closure, it was a huge benefit and gave us a lot of exposure we normally wouldn't have had. I definitely had some concerns about the aesthec, but totally understood everyone's need to throw it together. I have been talking a bunch with Eric from 55 and Flo from Mac's about how to make a permanent closure happen. If you have any quesons, or would like to schedule a meeng, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you so much,
Blair Carson

Dear Rules and Open Government Committee,
I am writing to you in support of Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the closure of these streets have proven to not only be a lifeline to our local businesses but also enhanced the vibrancy of Downtown San Jose. It’s really the only good thing to come out of the pandemic downtown and it makes a world of difference.

We give cars 100% of every road in this city, let’s make a little nice place for people too.

Closing the street to cars has allowed for more pedestrian activity and a focus on people. Please approve Councilmember Peralez’s request to agendize his proposal for City Council discussion. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Luke Spicer

Dear Rules and Open Government Committee,
I am writing to you in support of Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street.

We should make more of our city walkable and bike-able. Post Street was amazing when it was full of people eating, drinking and having fun. San Pedro Street is much nicer now than it was during the pandemic. I don’t want to lose this.

San Jose could be like Barcelona! We have the right weather, there’s good food and nightlife.

But our car-first city doesn’t make it easy.

Please bring back more of these pedestrian and bike affordances - I want a San Jose that’s friendly to people, rather than cars!

Cheers,
John Rowe

To the San José City Council,
We have collected 126 signatures in support of closing Post St to traffic and opening it to people. At the April 26, 2022 city council meeting, for agenda item 8.3, please support the memo item 2 for a weekly closure of Post St.

I have attached the petition and signatures. You can also view the petition at

Post Street for People

San José City Council,
126 people have signed a petition on Action Network telling you to Open Post Street for People, not Traffic.

Here is the petition they signed:

At the beginning of 2022, The City of San José affirmatively began allowing car traffic again on Post St., forcing the demolition of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and outdoor community parklets. This is a major blow to the downtown and LGBTQ+ community, as this was one of the only South Bay spaces for queer folks.

Open Post. St (from 1st to Lightston) to people, instead of traffic.

During the first year of the pandemic, San José and the broader South Bay community witnessed the emergence of a bustling, walkable, and FUN space—the result of Post St. in Downtown opening to people and closing to traffic. Later that same year, the area became officially designated as Qmunity District, a welcoming, inclusive, and affirming place for LGBTQ+ people and families in the South Bay. The new district featured shopping, socializing, dining, networking, and nightlife in Downtown San José on Post Street from S. 1st to S.

Market Streets.

A pedestrianized Post St. advances our goals as a community—providing a financial lifeline to the small bars and restaurants, transforming downtown into a lively destination that brings people together. The street itself better serves people on foot than in cars; it is short, narrow, and limited in street parking. Meanwhile, Post St. is near 12 major bus lines, light rail lines, bike corridors, and an already existing parking garage to serve existing demand without needing street parking on Post St.

The future of our cities is at stake at this moment; we know we must move toward vibrant community spaces without letting cars dominate every square inch of our streets. And we must do better for our LGBTQ+ South Bay residents.

Open Post. St (from 1st to Lightston) to people, instead of traffic.

Y ou can view each petition signer and the comments they left you below.

Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,
I am writing in support of Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the closure of these streets has proven to be a lifeline to our local businesses and enhanced the vibrancy of Downtown San José.

Closing these streets to vehicular traffic allows for more pedestrian activity and refocuses our public right of ways on people first. I ask that you approve Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on permanently closing San Pedro Square and weekend closures for Post Street. Thank you!

It has been very fun to see these streets come alive once vehicles were banned. It allows for more public space in downtown for people to gather and enjoy all San José has to offer.

Closing these streets to vehicular traffic allows for more pedestrian activity and refocuses our public right of ways on people first. I ask that you approve Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on permanently closing San Pedro Square and Post Street. Thank you!

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Jay Hartley

Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,

I am wring in support of Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the closure of these streets, and other community improvements for small business, has proven to be a lifeline to many local businesses and enhanced the vibrancy of Downtown San José and other communies. The council should allow for connued development for such uses throughout the enre City and also provide easy support that can assure safety measures for parkles when enre streets cannot be closed. Our climate generally allows for outdoor seang/entertainment and uses and as long as sidewalks are not blocked and appropriate ADA access is provided - such expansions and uses should be rubber stamped, provided for with the greatest of ease, and minimal in cost. It’s seems a great way for an area to encourage less driving and more pedestrian/non-motorized access for parcipaon.

Closing these streets to vehicular traffic as outlined in the Councilmember’s proposal allows for more pedestrian acvity and refocuses our public right of ways on people first. I ask that you approve his proposal on permanently closing San Pedro Square and weekend closures for Post Street. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,
I am writing in support of Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street. Ideally, I would even add the 300 block of S. 1st Street to the list as well. The City of San Jose needs to demonstrate greater urgency in rebuilding public space vibrancy in Downtown. Too often these days I hear comments from San Jose Jazz patrons describing a feeling of desolation when visiting our Downtown core.

As of last week (4/18/2022), of the 10 largest U.S. office markets tracked by Kastle Systems, San Jose, at 31.8%, remains the lowest "return-to-office" metro in the country. ( https://www.kastle.com/safety-
wellness/getting-america-back-to-work/). In whatever ways the City can demonstrate a "there there" in Downtown San Jose to help encourage local visitorship, business travel, and return-to-office we should be doing it.

I ask that you approve Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on permanently closing San Pedro Square and weekend closures for Post Street. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,
I am writing in support, with modifications, of Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on the Future of San Pedro Square and Post Street. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the closure of these streets has proven to be a lifeline to our local businesses and enhanced the vibrancy of Downtown San José.

I ask that you consider extending the current closure for an additional year which allows al fresco dining on San Pedro Street. During the one-year extension, plans can be made for the permanent closure of a minimum of the South portion of San Pedro Street from Farmers Union Restaurant to Modera.

Thank you.

I’m in support for improving San Jose through a permanent pedestrian thoroughfare on San Pedro (between Santa Clara and St John) and a weekly pedestrian throughfare on Post street.  All the great cities of the world have these pedestrian areas - and San Jose is a great city.

San Jose should also consider changing the streetscape - especially on San Pedro to make it more inviting.  Changes like:

- removing the level differences between the sidewalk and road - changing the surface to a more pedestrian friendly look San Jose should be considering how to expand the current pedestrian walkways as well.

Thank you,
Alan Williams

Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,
When we think about what the next 50 years of San Jose looks like, it will be a city in which more people walk freely along more of our streets.

Our streets will be more vibrant; easier to traverse; safer; healthier with fewer congestion & speeding from cars; and more economically viable for businesses of many different types.

That’s why I ask that you approve Councilmember Peralez’s proposal on permanently closing San Pedro Square and weekend closures for Post Street. Thank you!

Sincerely,
